My Spraypainting Ways

{Free printable from 30 Handmade Days}

I like me some spraypaint.

Oftentimes I’ll go a really long time without doing it.

And then, I’ll do one thing…and it’s like Frito Lay chips…you can’t have just one.

Or maybe more like “You can’t spray just one”.

But that sounds kinda gross.

Whatever.  Not the point.

It started one weekend when I decided to finally tackle the “Give the Gaucho a New Paintjob” task that we had been meaning to do since we bought it on Craigslist like 2 years ago.

You see, this isn’t just any power wheel type of truck thing.

It’s a Peg Perego Gaucho.

Or, more importantly: A Land Cruiser.

You know, like Daddy’s.

(Andy has a LC, I have a LC, and so apparently does Henry.)

It’s in great condition mechanically, but definately sun bleached.

Besides, Daddy’s LC is red.

For the record, silver spraypaint is uh-mazing.

So so so fun.

I kinda want to paint everything silver.

I mean, it’s springtime right?

Once Andy mows the lawn it’ll totally be gone.

Right?

I hate prep work.

So I usually skip it.

Don’t judge.

But seriously.

How cute did it come out?!

It looks brand new.

And it matches Daddy’s.

Which is super important.

Easter weekend the entire family gathered at Andy’s grandma’s house to clean out her garage.

Some treasures were to be found amid the dusty boxes.

Including Auntie’s stool.

Auntie basically raised Andy’s grandpa.

So…that would make Auntie my kids’ great-great-grandma.

The metal was kinda rusted and icky.

The vinyl had seen better days.

But when Andy pulled me aside and said “We really should take this home.  Can’t you spraypaint it or something?”

A-HA!

That man knows me.

Bright pink paint and some vintage inspired oil cloth?

Love it.

Although my DIY upholstery job is pretty bad.

Sooooo…I’m planning on taking it in to have it professionally done.

Some things are truly better left to the experts.  Lesson learned.

But I am *in love* with it.

It’s the perfect height for the kids to sit at the kitchen table.

Andy’s aunt and mom remember being little girls and watching Auntie peel potatoes at the kitchen sink while leaning on this little stool.

I’m such a sucker for romantic stories of old like that.

I love that my kids will be getting use out of the same stool that their great-great-grandmother used.

Especially since Auntie never had any children of her own.

I like to think that this picture would make her happy.

Also in grandma’s garage was this little rocking chair.

Which used to belong to Andy’s dad when he was a little boy.

Half of the stain had been worn away.

It was grimy from years of storage.

But it was still too stinking cute.

A good scrubbing?  Check.

Lime green paint (Henry’s favorite color)?  Check.

Matches with my ottoman cover?  Check.

Won’t drive me batty if it lives in my living room?  Check.

Kids making goofy faces in their grandpa’s childhood chair?  Check.

Some might be aghast that I spraypaint over old wood.

But here’s my take: if I can make it work with my home decor and for my family, it’s better than it sitting in a dusty garage or given to Goodwill for a stranger.

Right?

Totally.

Have you given something new life with spraypaint lately?

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I’ve never spray painted anything, but after seeing those projects, I may just have to give it a try. I have a sofa table that I adore sitting in my living room. I actually got it free from my old work place because it was broken. My husband promised to fix it, but almost 5 years later and still nothing. You’ve given me some inspiration to do something with it myself. Now just what to do….

spraypaint!!! and seriously…do a FUN color!!! a can is like $3.00. worst case you hate it, just do it again in another color! i actually painted the rocking chair a buttery yellow first…but it looked like…well…butter. which wasn’t as cute as i had originally thought. besides, the table was free, can’t really ruin it can you? :)

Love it. I have a hundred spray paint projects lined up. I should actually do them. Plus I have an old rocking chair sitting in my garage {for 5 years!}. I should spray it a funky colour. MIL would probably kill me, but hey, better than it sitting in the garage…

SPRAYPAINT THE CHAIR!!! I mean, your MIL will get over it. I’m sure she can find something else to kill you over. (I’m such an enabler…)

I “inherited” one of my MIL’s tables that she has had for years when I married her son. It’s not antique, so I spray painted it lime green! She doesn’t want it back, but I’m sure when she sees it she won’t love the color as much as we do;) I think you should paint the chair and put it to good use-Definitely better than just sitting around!:)

LOVE how Auntie’s stool looks, and your upholstering job looks pretty good for a first try, Giving the background info makes it really nice, and yes, I can see her at the sink peeling potatoes – boy could that woman cook! Anyway, thanks for sharing these. Mom and I were just talking about Auntie. This post really made me smile. Can’t wait to see you all soon!

I just found your blog and I’m so glad I did;) I am a huge fan of spray painting and fixing things up. Two days before my little boy was born, I was in the yard spray painting a little dresser I found at goodwill for $5! It is perfect in his nursery. My friends and family joke that I can always be found painting something. ha! We are going to be moving soon and I can’t wait to get started on some new projects.

Karlee has had the painting bug lately. She bought a head board at a thrift store for $13.99. It was ugly! She spray painted it black, and it turned out sooooo nice. Looks great in her new remodeled bedroom. She also bought picture frames for $1.00 each and has been painting them bright colors for a DIY project. That girl is in all of her glory crafting!

Ahhh Auntie…how we loved her. Not only did she peel her potatoes leaning against it, she is the only person I know that also peeled and sugared her tomatoes before putting them into a salad. Best. tomatoes. ever…Jeannett she would be so pleased to see her little stool revamped and used by her great-great grandchildren. Family was everything to her. Love what you did!

You and the spray paint = me getting ideas for projects. I was in the backyard today, looking at my daughters ‘picnic bench,’ and wondering hmmmmm how hard would that be to spray paint? It’s sun bleached as well.
Ottoman cover? OMG I am so hitting my MIL up for one of those. Ours is super grubby from the hubby (can’t even blame the kidlet for that one) and a cover would be SuPerB.
Looks awesome, you did a super job. As always, thanks for the ideas!

Ohmygosh, I died laughing at this post. My family gives me SO much grief for spray painting things black. Icky looking wall sconces refreshed for the front porch, an incredible mirror at a yard sale that now looks like $300, a wire basket we use for mail/keys, the list goes on. I pretty much can’t talk about any project or idea without SOMEONE in the fam saying, “oh, are you gonna spray paint that? How ’bout black?” and then they slap their knee and crack themselves up. Rude. But true. In fact I may or may not have about 4 things in the yard waiting for their turn to be done. Ha.

Hi there! I love these projects as I am an avid DIY-er. One question. I am in the process of buying a rocking chair for my baby girls nursery but I’m wondering if you need to sand it first or if you can just spray paint right over it?
