Now that we’ve unpacked all the boxes and are feeling more and more settled in by the day, my eye is now moving to making this house a home.
I can’t quite feel settled until I feel like the house is decorated.
This is a really obnoxious defect, because it’s silly and materialistic and frankly, I’m kind of embarrassed by it. But, I don’t feel cozy. And my house needs to feel cozy. And it won’t feel cozy until I feel like it’s all Just So.
Ironic, because it’s just going to be littered with toys and laundry, but whatever. I like decorating.
One of the first rooms I’m tackling is my master bedroom.
As you can see, I’ve moved my chandelier in. And by I, I mean Andy.
I die. Really.
(This chandelier used to be in the entryway of my last house, but here, the entry isn’t vaulted so it’s a little too low for the door where everyone will be walking in. I figured at the end of my bed, it wouldn’t seem so low.)
So let’s talk about this space a little, shall we?
I love having a white bedspread, and I’ve brought in some color through patterns in my throw pillows, headboard, and lampshades. (I know, they aren’t on the lamps. The little metal holder uppers are broken. Andy needs to fix them.)
You can see that I’ve strewn my curtains on the bed too. Those will go up in the room once I buy a new curtain rod. So picture those on the windows right there.
Here’s my dresser on the wall opposite the window.
Fairly plain. I probably need to decorate the top of it more intentionally.
One of the projects on our short list is to pull up the carpeting in the living area, hallway, and our master and install hardwood. Or engineered wood. Or laminate. I don’t know. Whatever we can afford.
The carpet is much too light a color for four kids, two dogs and four acres. Plus, it has this swirly viney pattern in it, like hotel carpet…which is sun faded in some parts and not in others where the previous homeowner had furniture and/or rugs. So even when the carpet is vacuumed it still almost looks dirty because it’s all two-toned and such.
Also, it’s probably just dirty.
I’m thinking of a darkish colored flooring like this. So picture pale silver walls (almost white…just the lightest tint of grey) and dark floors. Got it?
Now, I need a rug, right?
Obvs.
My first thought was something bold and graphic like this Ultramarine rug (because hello the colors are swoonworthy!), but then I realized it might get too busy with all the other patterns I have going on in the room.
Here. Let’s revisit patterns:
Striped lampshades. Chainlink headboard. Floral pillows. Floral curtains. Lots of different geometric and flowery type prints.
I think I need to tone it down a little, no?
Maybe something like this more subtle pattern?
Is shag back?
Please say it is. Because I love the idea of digging my toes into this silvery gray in the morning. Or is that too trendy and also solid and boring?
But see?
Because when you give a mouse a cookie….you send Jeannett rug shopping and suddenly she finds this PERFECTION of a bench. On top of the silver shag rug?! On top of the dark hardwood?!
Don’t worry Andy. I’m sure it’s all super cheap. Like five bucks. Swear it.
By the way, if you’re in the market for an area rug, I have an EXCLUSIVE promo code for 15% off ALL rugs on Wayfair.com between 7.31 – 8/4. Wayfair very rarely does promo codes, so this is really unusual.
If you’d like 15% off any rug, use code RUGLUV19.
You’ll still get free shipping on orders over $49 so that’s extra nice.
So what do you think? Solid shag or subtle pattern? Or should I forget the rug and just BUY THAT BENCH? Gah.
*Disclosure: I’m a Wayfair Homemaker and this post is part of my partnership with them.
I would move the aqua dresser away from being stark in the corner if you have a little room and maybe different night stands or the same nightstand and a sofa table as a nightstand to add some size to the big room and big chandelier which is stunning. A solid wing chair or something you could ad a pillow to? Beautiful room.
Geometric rug and awesome bench. If you can only pick one then pick the bench! You can get another rug some other time!
wow! it’s beautiful! the curtains will be the icing on the cake!
I am no decorater, so I really have no advice (other than I love that bench and the shag rug.) What I do know is funny and that title made me laugh. ;)
You can get carpet dyed for a fraction of the cost
That dark floor… Agh I want!!!! I have to say I like the multi-colored patterned rug. And the bench. On the wood floor. Because yes. It would look amazing.
Now I want to paint my walls. And shop.
SMH.
Happy hunting,
Caryl
here goes:
you either need a HUGE rug in there or 2 5×7/6×9 rugs, one on each side of the bed.
the bench on the end is a must.
you also need bigger bedside tables. sorry. they don;t have to match each other though.
and dark wood floors for sure.
wall color… you know how picky i am. it has to be the perfect grey. no blue or purple tinge.
i don’t love the stuff on top of the armoire.
i think the decorates on top of the dresser are fine.
chandelier = awesome
when are you having us over for dinner?
