Mother’s Day Gift Guide…for YOU!

mgg2

With Mother’s Day coming up, I thought I’d do a little twist on the typical Mother’s Day Gift Guides you’ll see in blogland…

If you’re anything like we are, your husband point blank asks what you want as a gift.  And, if you’re anything like me, you think about it for a minute and then shrug your shoulders and say “Meh.  Nothing, really.  Just be on breakfast duty with the kids.  Maybe I’ll grab a Starbucks and get a pedicure later.  I’m good.

But if you are anything like me, you can think of no shortage of fun, frivolous things you’d love to have about 300 days of the year.  Not that gifts are necessary on Mother’s Day (or any other day for that matter), but you know as well as I do that there are a whole host of things you love, but would never spend the money on yourself.  Particularly on a random Tuesday.  So if your husband wants to buy you a gift, I mean, let’s not hurt his feelings, right?

Or maybe your mom would love this stuff.  That’s cool too.  Or maybe you don’t care about any of this stuff.  I guess my goal is to get you thinking in the direction of “what’s that thing I’ve been drooling over the last several months that I’d never just buy for myself?”

Here are some of my frivolous favorites:

mgg

KitchenAid 5-Quart Glass Bowl: I have this.  I love it.  It’s pretty.  And totally unnecessary.  The metal bowls that come with your mixer are perfectly fine.  But you know, this one is glass.  Perfect gift status.

Really, REALLY nice baking sheets: We all have a half dozen cookie sheets in the cupboard.  But you know you secretly want a set of ultra nice, high end, commercial grade cookie sheets.  Or is that just me?

Pleated Poppy messenger bag: I need another bag like I need a hole in the head.  But the navy and green combo is killing me.  And it’s ridiculous cute.  If that’s a little pricey, something from the Gold Rush collection would work too.

Silicone Baking Mat Set (2 pk.): This is kinda the same thing as the baking sheets.  I mean, you could just use cooking spray…but if it’s good enough for fancy French cooks, it’s good enough for you.

Lisa Leonard ANYTHING: You really, truly cannot go wrong with LLD.  Nor can you own too much of it.  Ever.  Trust me.  Every time I think I’ve tapped out my Lisa Leonard needs, she comes out with a new design.  I love all of it, but my current crush is the Petite Family Crest bracelet.

Prismacolor 24 Piece Charcoal Sketching Set: There was a time in my life, long, long ago when I used to draw.  Doodle.  Sketch.  Back in those days, I used fancy artist quality products.  Today I don’t draw much beyond stick figures with half pieces of paperless crayons.  A special set of pencils might get me doodling again.

Le Creuset anything: Do you collect LC yet?  No?  That’s unfortunate.  The cast iron pieces are expensive.  No doubt.  But it’s a collection…and a built in gift idea for holidays and gifts to come.  Also, a total family heirloom kinda thing.  If the cast iron is out of reach right now, you can start with their stoneware.  I only have three cast iron pieces, but a ton of the more affordable stoneware.  And it’s all beautiful.  So pick a color and GO.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens: Do you have a DSLR and still using the lenses that came with the kit?  If there is one lens you add to your repertoire  have it be the 50mm.  It will take some getting used to zooming with your feet, but I promise that once you get the hang of it, you’ll be appalled at the color you get from that kit lens you’ve been using.  Plus, it’s pretty much the absolute cheapest lens you can possibly buy…so it’s really nice that it’s an awesome one to boot.

Photo Classes:  Do you have a DSLR and still shooting on auto?  Or are you like me and can shoot on manual but know there is still SO MUCH more to learn?  I’m currently doing the Photography 102 class and really enjoying it.  It’s a video series, so you can see what you need to do, and bonus is that it’s available forever.  No need to rush through the courses in a prescribed time, or have your login expire.  This is huge for me.  Huge.

Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System: I have the cheapy, knock off Olay version
of this.  It’s great.  I love it.  So naturally I want the real deal next.  Because that’s totally necessary.  Naturally.

Kindle: Like to read?  Like instant gratification?  Done.

Pen and Paint phone case: You know and love Pen & Paint already, right?  As if her prints and handpainted canvases weren’t enough, she’s now partnered with Uncommon and has phone cases with her adorable sketches.

What’s that one or two random, totally unnecessary, frivolous thing you swoon over all year?  No.  Really.  I want to know.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I’ve ask for anything Lisa Leonard, too. I haven’t been too casual about it either – I send him just about everything email I get. My mother in law is getting a piece from Lisa…I probably should have just ordered myself something too.

Excellent list! I have the glass kitchenAid bowl, too, and I absolutely adore it. Also the silpat mats.

This isn’t frivolous but I’m telling every mom I know to ask for the book Fit To Burst by Rachel Jankovic for Mother’s Day. It’s challenging and encouraging and I feel like every mama I know could benefit from it!
(P.S. I just ordered myself a necklace from one of my Etsy/blogging favorites, wifeysinger.etsy.com, when I ordered my mother-in-law’s gift. I told my husband, who is actually an incredible gift giver, that he gets this holiday off :))

I’ve asked for all kitchen items that I just never spent the money on. A set of plastic wine glasses (the kids keep knocking over the glass ones and shattering them on the deck!), nice baking sheets, and a new muffin tin. Why I don’t just go buy these things myself, I don’t know. But I sure hope I get at least one of them :)

A hammock is what I want for Mother’s day this year. I figure, I work in the yard, why don’t I ever relax in it?!?

Maxi dresses are my totally random must have right now….

Thanks for putting a link for photography classes; I have been wanting to take some classes to beef up my ‘learn-on-the-fly’ photography skills.

I totally agree on the Kindle, before I bought mine I found it kind of weird but now I could not live without it.

I would suggest getting the original cover from Amazon as well, the one with the retractable light powered by the Kindle itself. Makes the Kindle feel much more like a real book.

And of course makes it easier to read in bed at night with the little booklight. It doesn’t even drain the battery that fast :)

A Jo Totes camera bag! And I’d love a drink dispenser to have out this summer so my kids will drink more water. (Ok, me too.)

We disagree slightly. But everyone really does generally have their own personal technique. Reported by users there are more methods than one to skin a cat.
