Thank You $1.29 Toy

On a quick trip to the Walmarts a few weeks ago, I saw a rack of kites.

I try to not just buy random stuff for the kids, because let’s face it, they have more than plenty and I don’t want them thinking they get a toy every time I go somewhere.

But when I saw terribly cheap plastic kites for $1.29, I grabbed a couple.  After all, the whole thing was going to be a disaster, so why bother with ruining the more expensive versions, right?

Last weekend was rainy and weird.

The sun would poke out for a few minutes like a mean trick, and then the rain would come back and I’d be all annoyed again.

Dear Weather, please pick one thing or the other.  If it’s gonna rain, just rain.  We’ll cuddle on the couch with a fire.  If it’s gonna be sunshiney, then shine.  I can’t handle your mood swings.  Love, j.

Anyway, there were a few minutes of dry, so we rushed out as a family to fly our plastic kites.  I had really low expectations that they would fly…and really high expectations that there would be tears.

I braced my mama self.

But you know what?

It was windy.  Super windy.  And it turns out that even the $1.29 Yoda can throw down a mean show.

What up my little standing rockstar?

Girlfriend is killing it with her new braces.  She’s so much more confident on her feet.

I couldn’t be prouder.  No, sir.

Turns out that homeboy is a natural at kite flying.

Daddy started him out, but it was only a few minutes before he was running it on his own.

And doing tricks and making it swoop around.

And trying to whack his sisters with it.

Boys.

Lucy was our designated kite-getter.

It was an important job and she took it quite seriously.

And Jill just watched.

And shivered.

And pretty much was ready to go inside immediately.

Man up kid.  Puts hair on your chest.

Lucy took breaks from her kite retrieval services to pick her nose from time to time.

But she has kelly green ruffles on her bootie.

Whatever.

Lu can make even nose picking look good.

And within seconds of this last picture, the rain started…and downright POURED.  I ran in first, abandoning all others to protect my camera from the deluge.

Everyone else came in soaking wet.

Priorities.  I got ’em.

The kites are in the garage awaiting more use.  And after the success of these, I might even splurge and go back and get Henry the $2.88 versions.  ;)

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Love it! We are planning kite flying tomorrow, today it is rainy, cross your fingers. I too bought cheap-o kites but just couldn’t pass up Lightening McQueen!–glad to hear they work.

I just love your blog! Thanks for sharing!

Awesome pics (and commentary)! Your comments always make me laugh. Glad you got the chance to enjoy the cheapo kites. Someone gave my daughter one last year & I finally had to hide it to get a little peace from the constant “let’s go fly my kite!” Chatter. She never believed me that a kite REQUIRES wind to work. So. Annoying. Maybe I’ll dig it back out & try again. It’s certainly windy enough right now.

The cheap kites are the best! We’ve gotten the ones from costco, not worth it.. the girls were too cute :) I cracked up @ Lucy, didn’t even notice the nose picking since her ruffle bootie was so cute :)
    Henry looked like a natural!

Yeah, we’ve had some fun with cheap kites. Who knew?

As I was reading this post, my oldest (who is 4) came up and stood next to me. And the following conversation ensued.
“Who is that?” (Pointing to Henry).
    “His name is Henry.”
    “Can we go see Henry?”
“No Baby, we can’t. He lives far away.”
“Why? But I want to. I want to see his toys and play with them.”
    Me just laughing.

Is there such thing as playdates via Skype? LOL

Kites are so much fun! I agree that we don’t want our kids thinking they get toys every time we go to a store, but it can’t hurt once in a while, especially if it’s seasonal stuff you’ll use for a month or two and then put away for next year.

I grabbed a $3 jar of bubbles at the supermarket the other day for my two-year old and the crazy amount of joy those $3 brought were So. Worth. It. He had so much fun running around after the bubbles, and I snapped some really great shots of his smiles. And he slept really good that night. :)

We gotta live a little, right? Occassional treats make life fun.
