The Happy Day Project {Day 2: Handwritten Note Day}

{Are you playing along?  Have you linked up yet?  Go here for more details on The Happy Day Project.}

I big puffy heart technology.

I really do.

It’s convenient and quick and instant.

Twitter, Facebook, blogs and email make it really easy to keep in touch.

But remember when you used to actually bust out a pen and write a note to a friend?

Waaaaay back in the day?

How fun it was to see an envelope with a square-r shape in your own mailbox and how you smiled without even knowing it?

Let’s do that for someone else today.

Let’s suprise them the next time they go to their mailbox expecting bills, junk flyers and credit card offers with an actual, honest to goodness card.  That you didn’t type out in some computer program…but actually, you know, wrote on.

Just to say hi.

Just to say you appreciate them.

Just to say you’ve been thinking about them.

Not for a birthday or anniversary.  Just because you love them.  The end.

So pull out your feathered quills dipped in ink ladies, we’re about to get old school!

Lucky for us, the talented Emily of Hope Ink made it even easier and incredibly fun to do it.  She created a free printable especially for The Happy Day Project.  You can go HERE to download/print it.

How fun is it that Emily made one black and white so that your kids can color it in???!!!  I’m telling you…the talent and creativity in this blog world is astounding.

Now, today’s task should be easy for everyone to fulfill by sticking close to home.  We all know someone who could use some snail mail sunshine.  But we’d love it if you would consider helping us unexpectedly flood someone else’s mailbox?  If just one sweet note in the mail would brighten your day, can you imagine what dozens? hundreds? from all around the country would do?  Can we do this ladies?

Ready to bring it?

I met Wren at a park one day.  She invited me to the MOPS group which she was the leader of.  I was only able to make it to one meeting, not because I didn’t like it (I really did!) but if you know anything about my life, you know that it’s kinda hectic…and adding one more thing to the plate just couldn’t happen.  Anyway, not the point.  This isn’t about me.  Just giving you background.

Wren and her sweet family recently moved to Texas.  Where she found herself pregnant with Baby #3.  At 25 weeks along, she discovered she had Stage 3 rectal cancer.  Because the cancer was so advanced, they needed to deliver the baby as soon as possible so that she could get started on meds.  A delicate balance of two lives being considered.  Baby Grace was delivered at 30 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. 10 oz. so that her mama could get the medication she needed so desparately.  Little Grace had to live in the NICU for some time and recently came home.  Unfortunately, as this family cared for their tiny baby in the NICU, which is a stressful situation to say the least, they discovered that Wren’s cancer had spread and she now has lung cancer as well.

My heart is so broken for this family.  So many things going on at once.  So many heartbreaking circumstances.  I could go on and on here.  But I won’t.  Because there just aren’t words.  But my mama’s heart can hardly stand it.

And so, this is where this community comes in.  YOU

Let’s send Wren and her family a note.  From a complete stranger.  Who heard her story and wants to encourage her.  Let her know that there are people out there who don’t even know her…but care about her and her sweet family.  Because the world is small and we’re all in this together.

I’d also like to encourage you to please consider including a giftcard to Target or Walmart with your note.  I can’t even imagine what their medical expenses look like with cancer treatment and NICU time.  I’m pretty sure they can’t send a Walmart giftcard to their insurance company, but it can help offset everyday living expenses so that other money can be freed up.

Please do not be overwhelmed at the thought of giving.  At the prospect of helping.  If even 10 people sent a $10 giftcard…$100 buys a lot of diapers.  Please do not assume everyone else will do it.  Please do not underestimate the power of giving in small increments.  $5 may not seem like it’s worth it on your end, but if enough of those little bits find themselves in Wren’s mailbox, I promise you it will spread sunshine in a way that is bigger than each of us.

Will you help us spread sunshine and happy to a complete stranger?

If you’d like to read more about Wren and her family, and keep up on their journey, you can do that here.

Notes can be mailed to Wren’s church (where her husband is a pastor):

Harris Creek Baptist Church
c/o Wren Horn
401 Stageline Drive
Mc Gregor TX 76657

{P.S. Unless someone she knows sees this and tells her, she doesn’t even know…how fun is that???!!!  So if you know Wren, please consider keeping it a surprise…}

Happy Day friends.

I am loving this.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

    For some reason this has me all choked up. I love getting mail and I love sending mail! I have a box full of cards and fun paper that I use on a regular basis.Last year when a good friend was going through a rough patch, I secretly organzed a bunch of our friends to send her cards of encouragement and blessing. She still doesn’t know why her mailbox was suddenly inundated with kindness. I love it! Our church even has a card ministry. When anyone in the church knows of anyone in their life who needs some encouragement, there’s a list of ladies who will fill their mailbox with cards. Most of the time its a stranger but knowing that even strangers are praying for you can be really powerful. Thank you for sharing Wren’s story! I know there will be many blessings from this!
    I am so excited to spend the day writing letters! My kids are even on board! This is going to be fun!
