Fourth Of July 2011

Our church hosts a big family picnic every year.

Every year, it gets better and better.

Nothing changes with the picnic so much as that my kids get older and they enjoy it so much more.

And watching them have fun is the best kind of fun for this mama.

Lucy insisted on joining in the annual gunny sack race.

And I almost wet myself watching her hop like the older kids.

We cheered and clapped and hooted and hollered for her.

Which, clearly, she loved.

Jill watched from the sidelines with Cousin Nelle.

A tough race deserves a push pop as a reward.

Wouldn’t want to waste a single drop…

Jilly’s shirt didn’t fair much better either.

Speaking of which, these “shirts” are actually last year’s dresses!

My how my girls have grown!!!

In just one short year!!!

Henry and I did the water balloon toss.

We didn’t make it very far.

So unfortunate.

Bet you can guess what happened about 3 seconds after I snapped this picture…

This picture makes me all mama-nostalgic-happy-sad inside.

She seems so grown to me here.

Watching the others…the bigger kids…playing…her hands shyly behind her back…wanting to play too…

I wanted to scoop her up and let her join in, but it’s part of growing up…being too little for a bit to play every game.

Maybe next year sweet girl.  Just wait your turn.

But can we just take a look at these curls?!

So beautiful.

Especially when you consider the little wisps of nothing she had atop her head just 365 days earlier!

I realize this post is a bit of the Lucy Show, but it’s just how it worked out this time.  :)

Later that night we hosted some friends for a BBQ and fireworks.

Of which I have no pictures.

But we had fun.

So much fun.

What did you do?

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

This post just made me all kinds of happy. I’m not even quite sure why, because I don’t know you personally- maybe it’s the way you capture what’s going on with each of your precious kids in a given moment? You are really good at that:-).
