Adding some color

In our last house, I was really into dark, dramatic colors.

Maroons, sage green, golds.

And I relied heavily on those colors for my decorating scheme.

But I soon found that having a sage couch and wine colored lamp shades made not only for a dark house, but also made it nearly impossible to swap out details with the seasons.

Happy yellow and blue throw pillows in the Spring looked strange and out of place on an olive hued sofa.

So I resolved to stick to neutrals in the new house.

That way I could change things up easily.

And so I did.  (picture from my before/after of our new flooring)

Cream couches, tan walls…

and before I knew it, everything was BROWN.

Oh, and beige.

And boring.

And I realized that I was so busy trying to go neutral, that I forgot why I wanted to do it in the FIRST place: to bring in fun colors!!!

So, I’ve been slowly but surely adding some funky colors and I LOVE IT.

I started my color project by making a top slipcovery thingamabob for my ottoman.

Because somehow when I bought said ottoman my brain didn’t scream “YOU ARE BUYING A CREAM FABRIC THING DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE TO PUT THEIR DIRTY NASTY FEET UP ON!!!”

A slippy thing that comes off in two seconds and can be tossed in the washer?

Brilliant ifidosaysomyself.

(Amy Butler home decorator weight fabric.)

And a gallery wall of my favesies family pictures.

That’s always happy.

Next came some funky throw pillows I made.

Pretend you don’t see how filthy they are okay?

Thanks.

A pretty aqua-esque frame.  (Yes, it’s still empty.)

And blue hued votive holders.

Sitting so nicely and patiently waiting to be dusted.

Eventually.

I did finally fill this frame.

With this simply happy print from Lucky Bluebird Art.

Silly holla sign by Joy’s Hope.

I found this entry table at Target for massively 1,000% off clearance and paid a whopping $9.00 for it.

It was a really pretty espresso/cherry wood color.

Naturally, I brought it home, and to Andy’s horror, sanded it down and slopped blue paint on it.

I remember him pacing and shaking his head as I searched for the tools.

My favorite detail is the ceramic mustard damask drawer pull I got at Michael’s for $0.25.

Few things are better in life than when the $1 bins are clearanced out.

I mean, really.  It was already only a buck.

A happy print from Hope Ink.  And a hobnail votive holder from a garage sale.

Pretty coasters gifted to me by sweet Joy.

It’s really unfortunate if you aren’t friends with her.

Remember that milkglass urn?

I thought that the whole display needed some height.

So I went outside and cut some sticks off the tree in the front yard.

Except that I think it just kinda looks like I cut sticks off my tree in the front yard.

Gotta come up with something better.

I bet Nester would know exactly what to put there.

And did you see the happy, happy, colorful canvas?

It’s the John 3:16 Heart and Globe – Gallery Wrapped Canvas Print from Dayspring.

Look, I’m being 110% honest with you right now:

I had noticed it online before.  It looked pretty.

But when it came in the mail, I actually gasped as I pulled it out of the box.

The colors were so much more vibrant and bright and just plain prettier than the catalog pics had done it justice.

This was a case of it being waaaaaayyyyy cuter in real life than in the pictures.

It’s a print…but look at the detailing!

It’s really well made…sturdy, stretched canvas.

Happy bright gorgeous stretched canvas.

I’m over the moon happy with it.

I really think it helps bring the whole room together.

And best of all?

It’s 30% off the month of February!

John 3:16 Heart and Globe – Gallery Wrapped Canvas Print

What do you think of my colorful living room?

Is it too much?

{canvas was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.  and i really truly love love love it.  honest engine.}

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

That painting is BEAUTIFUL. I never think of Dayspring as having stuff like that – you definitely have inspired me to check them out! :) (well played Dayspring, well played).

I have neutral furniture with dark accents – I really want to brighten things up like you did! Thanks for sharing, I love all the ideas (and that accent table is SO AMAZING – I wish I was brave enough to try something like that!)

Have you ever thought about adding an area rug?…maybe something like this: http://www.homedecorators.com/images/items/detail/m53882310.jpg

i’d love an area rug, but i have two golden retrievers who shed like crazy…so i think a rug would just end up collecting dog hair and need vaccumed like three times a day. :(

Love the colors! May I suggest you spray paint the sticks to add even more color?

    • 11

i’ve thought about that…like a hot pink…but i’m afraid it’ll end up looking too punky brewster…although i suppose even if it did i could just go outside and cut more sticks…

Firmly trying (unsuccessfully)to tamp down envy that you got the canvas for giving a review…trying to remind myself that Chris gets blessed that way too (with some cool techno doohickies that both our husbands use in their world).

And I am happy for you. It is so cute and so right in the room!

Anyhoo, the sticks are great. I vote for keeping the arrangement. I found something similar on the beach the other day and loves its lines, complete with lichen hanging off of it. It was so graceful and striking. Now I wish I had kept it! (But I was a little skeeved out since it came…from the beach, yet I’ll let my daughters swim there! I know, makes no sense.)

I tend to gravitate to earth tones, especially browns. I try to add some color, but can never seem to make it work. Loving what you did though. Maybe I can get some inspiration from you. ;o)
