Missing the Forest for the Trees?

Something funny happened yesterday.

Yesterday was miserable.

I spent the day fighting yet another migraine.  Jill was acting weird, so I was on the phone with her medical team asking lots of questions.

Worried mama.

All three have the greenest, snottiest noses known to mankind.

And here…both of my girls are covered to their elbows in the sticky sweet of the oranges they are eating.

But guess what?

You can’t tell.

You’d never have guessed that I was having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day if I hadn’t told you.

All you can see is the explosion of color from my roses that have yet to get the memo that it is almost Winter.

The golden warmth of the sun.

The sweetness of my girls.

No headaches, no phone calls, no icky noses, no sticky fingers.

And I wondered how often I do that.

How often I get wrapped up in the minutae of the day and miss the beauty.

How often I’m so busy looking at the trees that I miss the forest.

The sillyness of Jill’s little paintbrush hair do.

The sass of Miss LuLu’s gait.

Tiny piggy toes playing in the warm grass.

The sun on her fair skin.

The friendship and comfort my kids find in their canine companions.

The patience of these animals.  And how they mother my babies in their own doggy way.

The concentration and determination of my little scooter pro.

His little tongue out.  Just like his mama.

I saw the moment from afar…walking back from checking the mailbox across the street.

And saw the beauty.

I saw what my neighbors see.

I wondered if what they see is God glorifying.

I wondered if looking out their windows, they smile.

Or frown.

But yesterday, they saw this:

Three little kids enjoying the sunshine.

And their bedraggled mama.

For a moment I didn’t see what had me groaning just a few minutes earlier.

I didn’t feel my headache.

I didn’t run for a kleenex.

I didn’t rush to wipe up hands.

I just cherished the innocence of the moment.

There was something magical.

The green of the grass.  The gold of the sun.  The magenta of the roses.  The sweetness of my babies.

It was technicolor.

I felt like that scene in Wizard of Oz when the movie changes from black and white to full, glorious color.

I was humbled.

I am blessed.

God is good.

Even in the middle of a migraine.

And so I challenge YOU today.

In the midst of the laundry and the dishes and the fights and the mound of diapers…just start snapping.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find on that memory card.

See the blessings in your life in technicolor today.

At the end of the day, go through your pictures and find what you forget to see.

Blog about it.  And then link up!

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Thank you for the reminder. I think we all need this reminder to look past the small to the bigger picture. I for one have been struggling a lot these past few weeks. I seem to fall further and further behind on the housework and my three boys seem to be getting more and more unruly. But thanks to your post I am going to CHOSE to look for the beauty in our days. CHOSE to find and cherish those special moments…even if they are snot covered. ;)
