Home Sweet Purple Home

I know, I know…I’m the first one to complain when someone hasn’t posted in a while on their blog, but these people are utterly more interesting than I am, so they have more to say.

Tomorrow we are hosting a Super Bowl Party at our house. If everyone who said they were coming, shows up, we will have 18 kids at the house (and 21 adults)! I think I’m going to run to Target this afternoon and buy some balls and other kid friendly stuff to keep them occupied. The poor Heldt kids always get stuck playing with this bag of old stuffed animals that Andy gave me while we were dating…you know, those things that you don’t have the heart to throw away, but you don’t exactly want out on display? Well, little Anna sure seems to love that silly bag and knows which cupboard I keep them in and always asks oh so nicely for them. We have Andy’s old Tonka trucks in the backyard that he recovered from his mom’s storage unit, and the Moses boys get a kick out of playing with those. And I have some of the He-Man and She-Ra books from my own childhood. It’s fun to watch little ones play with the actual stuff you used to play with. Nonetheless, I’m gonna stock up on some other stuff just to have at the house…besides, it’ll come in handy eventually!

But either way, this is one of the main reasons we were so antsy to get out of an apartment and into a house. Sure, we’re still renting, and it obviously costs more, but we love the house we’re in. We love to entertain, and love having people over. In some ways, we feel a little like we’re sharing God’s blessing of providing this big house to us with our friends. Getting people together is so much fun and it’s been great mixing up our “church” friends and our “college” friends…and the others we’ve met in between (Regusci’s I’m so bummed you’re not coming!). Sure, the house is purple and pink, and I have a bathroom painted the exact shade of Pepto Bismol, but we many times just sit and marvel at how nice God is to us, and yet, we’ve done nothing to deserve it. So, we go out of our way to open our doors to our friends and family. Maybe it’s silly, and probably not entirely biblical, but we’re very thankful for it…purple paint and all. (The picture really doesn’t do it justice).

In case you’re wondering why on earth we live in a purple/pink house…apparently, the people who owned the house before us, had a son who fought in Iraq. When he came home, they thought they would surprise him by painting the house red, white and blue. Unfortunately, the house is really more of a purply/blue (depends on time of day) with this mauve trim…I’m not sure if when the paint was dry, if the people looked at it and said “perfect!” or thought “oh, that is NOT what we were thinking!”…either way, every neighbor we have has commented on if our landlord is going to re-paint (no, I don’t think so…the stinky part is that the paint is only a few years old…so, it’s brand new, and I think that painting a house is relatively expensive, especially if its not needed). One neighbor told me that her grandkids refer to it as the Christmas House…because it’s all brightly wrapped like a big Christmas present…it’s their cue that they’re only a few houses from grandma’s house! So, maybe it’s more of a public service…some people use stadiums, prominent statues, and public fountains as landmarks for getting around town…we provide the Gibson Home! (It’s actually starting to grow on me…everyone in Santa Maria knows the Purple House in Sunrise Hills!)

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

that’s not too bad. The apartment I live in is bright pink, as in Pepto pink. It got painted the summer before I moved in, it used to be a nice neutral light yellow. The landlady is a little insane we think. She has even commented on how it’s nice that we can look at the other building next door that is a nice soothing blue, but they have to look at ours… hmmm. It does grow on you though. I hardly notice anymore, and it does make it easy to give directions. “I am the bright pink house at the top of the driveway”

Okay I HAD to post a comment to say that just today I was talking to Anna about how we’re going to your house tomorrow, and she got very excited, and started talking about how she’s going to play with the dolls and toys out of that bag!!!

(Also we were driving today and Anna piped up with “That’s Jeannett’s house”, and I said no, it’s not, and she said, “It had a red door!” So apparently she has noticed the colors of your house.)
