Our Family

There are a handful of things I want to leave my kids with.

One of the things I want my kids to know…something I intentionally set out to do…is for them to know that we are a family.

A quirky family.

A silly family.

A loud family.

A family that regularly sings the chorus to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

As loud and purposefully off-key as possible.

In the kitchen where it echoes is the best place to practice.

A family with five very distinct and strong personalities.

A family that yells.

A family that is learning what its like to live together every single day.

Where tempers flare.

Where tears fall.

A family that tries to give grace.  And somedays that works better than others.

But a family just the same.  A unit.  A team.

We cheer together.  For eachother. We share in eachother’s joy.

Clapping and yelling and goofy touchdown-esque dances break out in the middle of the bathroom when Lucy finally goes peep peep in the toilet.

Smiles and gentle hugs when Jilly cruises around the furniture like a pro.  “Mommy!  Jilly’s doing so good!  I’m so proud of her!  Did you see???!!!”

An absolute welcoming party everytime Henry comes home from those oh so long four hours at preschool.

Where hugs and kisses are a constant, all-day, never ending, we just can’t help ourselves kind of thing.

And even through the crazy not so good days, I want my kids to feel really really lucky that of all the families in the whole wide world…they got to be in this one.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Oh how this speaks to me today. My children are 14, 12, and 8… and lately I’ve been feeling like my teen son detests living in our home. But then I am reminded how often he chooses to hang out with us. He thinks I’m crazy and his dad is a dork… but he DOES love us. I pray that my kids are happy to be in our family too!! :)
