Oh LuLu…

In all the hullabaloo of the new kitchen and frankly, the daily life, I had yet to mention one other fairly big change around here.

Miss Lu, at the ripe age of 21 months, has graduated to a Big Girl Bed.

You see, my girl, my precocious girl…learned how to hop right out of her crib.

And while she was able to swing that chubby thigh right over the rail and lower herself down with a shocking measure of gracefulness, she couldn’t get back in her crib once her shenanigans were exhausted.

And, I figured that her gymnastic grace might one day elude her, and I’d rather avoid a broken baby bone if I could manage it.

I would like to point out that her brother, never ever ever climbed out of his crib.  Not once.

He graduated to a Big Boy Bed at 21 months too…but only because we were gonna need his crib for his sisters.

Oh, Lu.

My hair is turning grayer by the minute, sweet girl.

Now, moving to Henry to a normal bed was easy.  He would play and goof around for a bit, but within 30 minutes, he’d crawl into bed and go to sleep.

Miss Lucy, has been a whole different story.

And it certainly doesn’t help that she shares a room with her sister.

Lots of playing.  I often find Jill in bed with shoes, socks, dolls…name it.

Apparently Lucy delivers them to her.  What a nice sister, no?

And then there was the day that I heard both of my girls shrieking with laughter.

Oh what a time they were having!

I sat at the computer down the hall from their room and smiled.  Happy that they were playing together.

Oh the giggles of twin girls!  There really are fewer things in life that are more sweet.

Finally, I decided to go in and get them.

I’ll spare you the gory details, but I’ll simply say that it included a dirty diaper, apparent finger painting on just about every surface in the room, and sharing with her sister.

Oh, and lots of dry heaving and watering eyes and cursing from their mother.

My text to Andy: I don’t get paid enough for this somedays.

A few weeks of sleeping in onesies, and I think we’re past playing with bodily nasty.

But after every sleep, she tears her room apart.  Redecorating.  She gets that from me.

Sunday, I went in to get the girls.  I could hear Jill’s playful chatter and they’d napped an unusually long time.

Hurricane Lucy had certainly cut a large swath through the room.  As always.  No surprises there.

This is what I opened the door to.  I looked around the corner, expecting to see her sleeping on the floor, and began to panic when I couldn’t find her right away…where could she have gone???

(We took the inside door handle off of the door so she can’t escape.  I knew she was in there somewhere.)

Well.  I found her.  Passed out.  Drooling.

On the changing table.

I ran downstairs “Andy!  Quick!  You have to see this!”

We were all quiet so as not to wake her.

But girl was ah-sleeeep.

She didn’t wake to her brother’s giggles.

Mama’s camera clicking.

Or Jilly’s bouncing and squealing excitment at all the ruckus in the room.

Or to my deep groan when I saw that she had emptied out and apparently unfolded, one by one, an entire brand new package of wipes.

Not just a box of wipes.

But the giant refill bag from Costco that has like 800 wipes in it?  Yeah, that one.

Lu…

You give me so much more work.

You’re lucky you’re cute or I’d have sold you on Craigslist long ago.

Jill.  Don’t think you’re off the hook.  I know you giggled and watched your sister doing all kinds of naughty.

You totally encouraged her.  And then you think you can act all sweet and cute and bedheaded and “but mama, it wasn’t me!”

Yeah.  I’m onto you lady.  I know your Undercover Naughty ways.

Lu woke up in a panic.

It was a good thing I was there…because she didn’t remember she had, you know, fallen asleep on top of the changing table, and would’ve fallen right off trying to get up.

Lucy.  Sweet girl.  I love you.  And even though you make us crazy a lot of times with your mischevious ways…you make us belly laugh an awful lot too.

I love your crazy.  I love your fearlessness.  I love your intensity.  I love the loud and full personality that pours out of your tiny toddler self.

Keep on truckin’ girl.  You can push all you want…but know that I’ll just push back harder.

Always.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

That’s too funny! I love the photos of Miss Lucy sleeping on the changing table and knowing she got up there herself. Priceless. We moved my twins to their toddler beds at 19 months. One climbed out, and the other was on her way to doing it too. We’ve basically stripped their room of all else except the beds, otherwise, they would tear their room apart too. You’re right, there’s nothing as sweet as hearing the giggles of twin sisters.

LOVE THIS! Kaitlyn would heave herself out of her crib too, at 18 months or so (and she’d bruise her thighs in the process!) So she also had to graduate to a big girl bed early. So, so weird!

AND, nooooo comment on the finger painting and sharing. Been there. You know all about me and my duct taping ways.

Your kids are soooooooooooooooooooo precious. LOVE them! And I love that you photo documented this. SO adorable!

This is a great idea for a post! Brockman destroys his room every nap time and then I find him sleeping in odd places like behind his toy bench! Some times he destroys his room and crawls back into bed. How funny Lulu is! Glad she was “safe” lol!

LOL! Now that is just too funny and too sweet! My almost 2 year old does the same thing, except he tends to intice his almost 4 year old brother into helping him.

I love how you capture the everyday shenanigans of your littles! Too funny….finger painting body waste, 800 wipes strewn about, and sleeping on the changing table, not so funny.

I’m enjoying this. This was Sedona a few years ago. Almost to a “T” I definitely remember the wipes, the baskets stewn all over, the finding a too-quiet toddler fast asleep on the changing table. And I can’t remember the diaper incident with our child…I know we had a few because we used tape and onesies also…maybe I’m blocking it out. Anyway, I feel so much better to know my spunky girl and my hurricane house, not to mention exhaustion are a common parenting theme.

And your sweet words at the end? Oh, Friend! The sweetest Mama-encouragement.

And your pictures? Oh, so beautiful!

Oh wow, what a handful! Reminds me a bit of my little guy, I have to put everything out of his reach or he’d destroy it. He’s also getting close to climbing out of the crib, but I am not ready to upgrade him to a big boy bed yet so I’ll be using sleep sacks for awhile, worked for my girls so I’m hoping it will work for him too. And I love your decorating job on the girls room!

BEST POST EVER!!! hahahaha, gotta love that kid! So hilarious. We still have our video monitor set up in Adam’s room so we can see all the trouble he gets into. Luckily he’s usually pretty good and stays in bed. Whoever says boys are harder needs to read this post! ha :)

such a sweet post of memories you will love having…no?! kaia crawled out of her crib one night but I didn’t know it. she was crying and I was determined to not get her that night. I felt so bad when I found her asleep at the foot of her crib on the floor the next morning when I opened her door. we moved her to a big girl bed the next week. and twin giggles….that does sound like pure delight!

and while dave was on a remote tour to Korea for a year for the Air Force, kaia figured out how to remove her dirty diaper…twice in one day. I called him crying. once was…well not funny…but manageable…twice was cruel.

Thanks for the good laugh! I have on that is very similar to your Lucy. She’s 16 months old and I’m expecting her to tumble out of her crib any day now. It will be sooooo disastrous when she figures that feat out.

Your Lucy should meet my Nessa. . .out of her crib at about 15 months due to one too many escapes. Thing is–she would wear a brace for hip dysplacia during sleep time and I was so worried that she would hurt herself–hence, the big girl bed. I just sat in my bed and watched her crawl up on the changing table on Sunday!!! 18-months and nowhere left to climb in her room. Our own little monkeys: )

That is hysterical! I can only imagine…. my daughter has taken off her clothes, but not the diaper. She’s 25 months, so we’ll see what happens with the crib… usually she slams it against the wall… good times…

    Oh. my. goodness.
As a fellow mama of twins (and mine are 20 months apart from their older brother), i understand this mischief. I had a mischief maker of my own. But never quite to this extent. Although we did go through some reinforcing of the dipe with duct tape, as so they could not tear it off once we left the room…
