We’ve been busy busy little bees over here at the Casa de Gibson.
Funny how I can blog about lazy days of playing but really we’re a whirlwind of commotion over here!
Wanna see?
It involved my new boyfriend, Liquid Sandpaper.
I’m going to marry it someday.
It involved lots of painting.
Two (sometimes three) coats of primer.
Removing all of the pretty hidden european hinges.
{gasp!}
Taking off ALL the kitchen cabinet doors…are you guessing by now…???
Taping. Lots and lots of taping.
By now you’ve probably figured it out….
We’re doing a mini-remodel of our kitchen!!!
Starting with updating our cabinets with a fresh coat of paint.
Which, incidentally, is nerve wracking.
I told Andy:
“You know, this isn’t like painting a random dresser. We have to do this RIGHT. No cutting corners. No getting lazy halfway through. We can’t just sell it on Craigslist if it comes out bad. These are our KITCHEN CABINETS!!! If we screw this up, it can affect the value of our HOUSE!”
No pressure.
By the way, I had a mild panic attack after the first coat of primer.
I mean, WE CAN NEVER GO BACK.
We can’t get part way through and decide, nah, we like the wood tones better.
Nope, we’re committed. We have to see this thing through.
Who’s idea was this?
Don’t answer that.
I’m working with the good folks at Wilsonart for new countertops, so it was really nice to not have to worry about ruining our existing counters.
More work space?
Perfect.
The plan?
Simple, easy, affordable.
My kitchen has good bones.
It’s all in great condition (it’s only 6 years old!).
But it needed a little umph.
Standard in stock at Home Depot all the time Honey Oak cabinets? Um, notsomuch.
White tile with white grout? Don’t even get me started.
No hardware? No cabinet knobs or drawer pulls? Boo.
First step: paint the cabinets white.
Here we were trying to decide on WHICH white.
It was an epic battle between Vermont Cream and Polar Bear.
It was tense, it was a real edge of your seat competition, but Vermont Cream edged out Polar Bear at the last second.
For now, my kitchen looks like this.
No drawers. Primer. Blue tape. Paintbrushes and rollers throughout.
And even though this is only primer, I’m loving the color change up.
It has brightened up my kitchen significantly!
(Sorry these pictures are so lousy. I literally ran downstairs and snapped them at 5:45 this morning!)
Wanna see the rest of my plan?
I’ll explain more in later posts, but for now, you can take a gander at my “design board”.
Which is just a fancy way of saying “I spent way too much time on Polyvore putting together a collage of stuff I had already picked out anyway.”
See that BEAUTIFUL pendant light in just the right shade of jadite?
It’s from Barn Light Electric.

You know I love it!! I sooooo understand the fear of the first coat. I basically said the same thing to Marc and I dove in and started painting…no turning back. Can’t wait to see it all completed…it will beautiful!
