Thanks.

Our neighbors two houses down are a bunch of boys from the local Air Force base.  In light of today being Veteran’s Day, I thought I’d bake these single kids some chocolate chip cookies.

They weren’t the prettiest cookies I’ve ever baked.  But I’m hoping that the boys aren’t that discriminating.

(Remind me to not do stuff like this on a whim when I have about 400 other things going on that day).

“What’s Veteran’s Day?”

“A Veteran is an ‘army’ guy.  They protect us and keep us safe.  So today we want to say thank you.”

It is so important to me that my children understand the meaning behind holidays.

And not just that it’s a day off from school or work.

Cookies for the 20-something boys seemed like a good idea.

As we walked off, I wondered if they just thought I was lame.

These good looking boys with their fancy cars and steady stream of pretty girls coming by.

Those old high school insecurities creeping back in.

Really?  I just took them cookies?

How lame is that?!

I wonder if they laughed at me as we walked away?

This stay at home mom and her passel of kids.

One wearing her brother’s rainboots that are 4 sizes too big.

And a goofy bag of cookies.

And maybe they did.

Or maybe they didn’t.

Either way, it doesn’t matter.

Because this morning was a small step in the values I want to instill in my children.

*Love others.

*Serve others.

*Be thankful.

*And always race your sister home.

A very sincere thank you to all the servicemen and women.

And to the unsung heroes that are the military wives, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters…and oh those mamas!…who’s boys are loved on by a rag tag group of kids from down the street.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I.LOVE.This.Post…. I don’t know what their reaction would have been, but it doesn’t matter as much as the way you lead your children… well done, mamma, well done!

    Jeannett,

I GUARANTEE that they LOVED the cookies (and the gesture alone). My dad is in the Army and it makes his day whenever little boys (and sometimes girls!) come up to him in public when he’s in uniform, just to say “hello” and “thank you sir!” Plus 20 something-year-old boys + cookies= heaven to them! Thank you for instilling those values in your children :]

I would probably feel the same way – but I’m SURE the boys didn’t. I mean, really, what man WOULDN’T want homemade cookies??

And Lucy is getting too big for her own good…

As a military spouse who has fed plenty of single military guys in my day, I can guarantee you they will eat anything – and everything – put in front of them. If you don’t believe, try a chow hall line some day. It’s improved significantly over times past, but still, it’s mass produced food. Trust me, those cookies are history by now.

    What a sweet gesture!

They definitely loved the cookies and the thought that went into them. Homemade cookies?! No question.

I can guarantee they were appreciated!!! My husband is in the Air Force, and our new neighbors did the same sort of thing. It’s nice to know people still remember, even though most military members are too humble to say so. And from my experience, any baked goods around Air Force guys disappear rather quickly. :)
