I hate the beach.
Despise.
The sand.
The sticky salt water.
The sand.
The sunscreen you have to reapply.
That’s all scratchy because your hands are covered in sand.
And no matter how many times you reapply, you still go home with stinging shoulders.
The sweat.
That mixes with sunscreen and burns your eyes.
And when you try to wipe your eyes, you then get them filled with sand.
The PB&J sandwiches…sand crunching between your teeth.
The bees that threaten to crawl into your soda can.
Remembering the horror stories of that kid who took a swig of Coke and died when his throat swelled shut because a bee stung his esophagus.
(Urban Legend? Who knows?)
Finding sand in places on your body you didn’t know you had.
Scratchy scalps.
Sand in cars.
Everywhere.
If it isn’t obvious, much of my disdain for the beach revolves around sand.
Nothing makes my skin crawl more than the image of a kid rolling around in sand.
Goosebumps just thinking about it.
Die.
And yet…I love the beach.
The funky shops filled with colorful shells.
Surf reports handwritten daily on a giant chalkboard.
Old skool style.
Old men fishing off the pier.
Seagulls staking out some poor kid’s sandwich.
Funky rusted out windows and locks alongside weathered siding.
Long wooden piers.
Perfect for representing some Laker Love.
Born and bred baby.
Wind kissed cheeks.
So, I love the beach.
And hate it.
Tell me I’m not the only one???
my mom used to take me down to that seashell shop when i got A’s on my stuff from school or if i was being particularly good. most of my room growing up was decorated just like that shop.
Mostly hate it. The sand. Hate sand. But I love to look at the ocean (if I can do it without touching or being touched by sand). So that’s something. But there’s wind (with sand in it), and there’s the frizz factor. Curly hair doesn’t like the beach. Too bad the kids love it. Nehemiah practically eats sand, even at four years old. He loves it. Lies in it. Rolls in it. Buries himself in it. He would live in it. And he tans, so go figure. If it weren’t for his personality, I’d question whether he was mine.

I am the same way, I HATE the sand and sunscreen, but I love the water, except that here in Guam, the salt content in the water is higher. So when we get out and dry off, we have this layer of salt all over us!! Its fine, but it makes me feel stiff and dry and uncomfortable! If only the beaches around here had showers for after you get out (some do)! And if only I didn’t need to apply SO much sunscreen to my fair skinned self and children…then I could get past the sand!

Oh you are NOT alone. I HATE the sand. It gets EVERYWHERE, and it is so hard to get out of my boys’ hair. Then it ends up in their beds…just thinking about it is making my blood pressure rise! :) At the same time, I do love the ocean, miss seeing it on a regular basis, and oh how I miss the sound of the waves.
So, yes, I too have a love/hate relationship with the beach!

yeah, for some reason Isaac considers plastic shovels to be more of a spoon than anything else. I honestly didn’t think he would SWALLOW! Hate hate hate hate hate going to the beach. Sad really as my kids have an equal and opposite reaction that out votes mine.
Obviously, you’re not the only one. No matter how hard I tried to keep the sand at bay, I couldn’t. But I grew up near the beach and was always there. Took my kids and we still live by the beach. Love walking in the water, but, yes, hate the sand in my clothes, food and car. What’s the lesson God is trying to teach us? :)

Love the beach except for most of the reasons you listed and having to shake out the blanket continuously but otherwise love going. Where I am we don’t have an awesome pier though.
I HATE, HATE, HATE SAND! I can’t even remember liking it as a child. I hate it, I need a word stronger than hate to describe my feelings for sand. If it weren’t for my children’s friends taking them they would never go to the beach which is kind of sad considering we live only 15 minutes away. I do like the water though, so to compensate for not going to the beach, we put some water in our backyard and surrounded it with cement! Also known as a pool – BEST invention ever!
BTW Instead of being thankful to my friends for taking my kids, I still get extremely annoyed when the kids come home covered in sand! I am truly a rotten friend! :)
Mostly hate it. Considering my mom grew up on the beach you’d think I’d at least like it, but mostly I just hate it. Hot. Sandy. Sand. And then there’s wet sand, and sand that sticks to everything. And I mean. Everything.
Can’t wait to take my girl to the beach though, go figure =)
This is such a great post. I work for Sand-Off and did a search to find people who love the beach, but hate the sand. Obviously, yours popped up. I’m totally with you. Sand is a stage 5 clinger and gets in the way of us enjoying the beach! Thats why, Jason, Sand-Off’s founder, created a mitt to have an all-natural patented powder infused in it to easily wipe away sand without the use of water. It’s become a life saver for me! I just wanted to share it with you so it could help make your beach trips a little less sticky and gritty. :)

I’d be happy to send you one to try out and review for your blog and help the other ladies deal with the sand too! You can tweet us @sand_off or find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/getsandoff.
Thanks!
DH loves the beach. Me? Not so much. A quick walk along the shore and then its back up to dry land and a shower and dry socks and shoes!
