Tuesday is one of my work from home days but I had an afternoon meeting scheduled in the late afternoon. Andy was going to come home early and watch the boy while I was out. Henry was unusually whiny and needy. He wouldn’t let me put him down…much less leave the room. But I HAD to get ready for my meeting. I was, after all, still in my pj pants. I tried the exersaucer, the bouncer, toys…nothing worked. He just screamed. Finally, in utter desparation, I moved his bouncer smack in front of the TV and flipped it on. I felt awful, but I didn’t have any other choice. Commercials were on. I even mumbled to myself as I ran down the hallway to get dressed “Ugh…I’m a terrible mom…I can’t believe I just did that…”
I got dressed, did my hair and make up. Henry didn’t make a peep. I cringed a few times when I thought about why he was so darn quiet. *Groan*
About 20 minutes later, dressed and ready to go I went back out in the living room and gasped…
Wait for it…
He was watching JERRY SPRINGER!!!!
Of all the shows…that’s what was on!!! I didn’t even know that was still on TV!
So, go ahead, call CPS on me. I totally understand. Let’s just hope that Henry’s first words aren’t: “paternity testing”.
I am totally laughing out loud right now. I so know the feeling of feeling like a bad parent for sticking in front of the tv. I’ve never let him watch Jerry, but he does watch soaps on occasion :)
Once when Zak and Eliot were little I just needed a bath so I did the same thing, except they were old enough to accidentally change the channel and when I went back in the living room after my bath I had to explain to them that women don’t really marry other women (although times are changing). Needless to say what they stumbled on was far cry from Animal Planet!
I mean “powerful”…. I’m a dork.
Wow, of all shows!!! It’s amazing how power TV is. I don’t think Hen will need too much therapy!
Ha! Steve and I are totally laughing. That’s the ‘real world’ right? Gotta love it.
Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious. Don’t beat yourself up about the tv thing – sometimes you’ve just gotta do what you gotta do!!!
“wait for it…” You kill me.
Notice I’m not commenting on the post itself, because I’m the one that watches my soap with all my kidlets running around… I do mute it and read the captions, however. Does that count?
Seriously, when Ainsley won’t sleep I stick her in front of the TV and it works everytime. She won’t fall asleep, but she calms down. I’ve used that trick since she was 6 weeks old! Of course it is Baby Praise, Baby Einstein, or one of Aubrey’s shows, but still effective. I often have a musical DVD on when the kids are playing. I have more of them then I do kids CD’s, and it just adds a nice quality to the noise.
We rarely have the TV on adult programing before 7pm anymore. Every channel has profanity now. I was watching What not to Wear on Friday Night while Aubrey and I were cloring and the host said “ass” twice in five minutes. Thanks guys, I really need my 2 year old asking how her a** looks in her jeans!
We need those many breaks to regain control, at least I do!!! Springer is a funny choice but has very animated guests.
hahahahaha!!! that so made me giggle!! poor Henry, he is going to be so warped when he grows up… Just Kidding!!!!
okay that is HILARIOUS! he does indeed have “animated guests”, as my sister-in-law so eloquently said.
(and anna spent her entire babyhood watching days of our lives with me and kristen borland. it’s good for brain development…right? :) )
Too funny.
I got my first issue of Martha Stewart Living in the mail today! Thanks!! I giggled when I first saw it addressed to Sue-Ellen Atkinson, but then I keep sneaking peeks at it, because it looks so funny to me. :)
