In Which Glitter Solves Everything

There once was a pair of boys skater shoes…

That were to suddenly replace all of the sweet mary janes, delicate pink jelly sandals, and gold lame flats in the closet.

You see, one sweet girl was prescribed a pair of SMOs...which would hopefully help her learn to walk, but meant that socks and new shoes wide enough to accodomodate them would be the rule.

The mama cried at this new development.

That the invisible was becoming visible.

That a physical reminder would be the norm.

And a weird, unexpected mourning of girly shoes.

All the darling little straps…the painted piggy toes peeking through…the sweetness of a flowered band paired with a sundress…to be traded for big, clunky, chunky, BOY shoes.

A mamas heart twisted with guilt that she was grieving something as silly as shoes…when the exchange was walking.

Guilt is a funny thing that finds its way into the oddest of moments.

But armed with some mod podge and lots of pale pink glitter, that mama decided to make the best of it.

After all, doesn’t glitter make everything better?

Why yes.

Yes it does.

They may not be the sweet magenta jelly sandals of last week, but let’s face it: girlfriend can rock the skater shoes like a champ.

And the truth is, between the cuteness of those blonde piggie tails, the goofiness of that grin, the sassiness of that glitter, and the way she already shows more confidence when she stands…well, this mama should have known better than to be sad.

Because Miss Jilly…she’s gonna bring it no matter what.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I love the glitter! What a great way to turn lemons into lemonade. Somone in a previous comment recommended hatchbacks. They are really nice, but are quite spendy. I’ve found that Crocs work really well with my daughter’s AFO’s and also this winter I found her some Ugg-type boots with side zippers.

Your daughter is precious. Do you mind if I ask about her diagnosis? My daughter has Rett Syndrome and sometimes I see some similarities in your sweet girl.

Oh I remember those exact feeling when my daughter got her SMOs…..sure, I made them make the SMOs all pretty and have hearts on them, but they certainly didn’t overshadow the not-so-cute shoes that needed to be worn. Sigh. We cheat though and let her wear GIRLY PINK STRAPPY shoes to church on Sundays. Shhhhh!

Oh, and for what it’s worth, we did end up finding a pair of wide Nike girl shoes (garage sale!) and all we needed to do was take the lining out of the bottom – wahla! The only thing that STINKS….as that they TIE. Yuck.

Love the glitter – and she looks so PROUD!

Oh goodness, I so understand and I am so proud of you for pulling out some glitter and dolling those shoes up! I refused to call them “Orthotics” and so instead referred to them as “puppy dog shoes” based on the decorations on the straps. We called them this — through many incarnations that mainly included super heroes NOT puppy dogs for years….until at about 11 my boys looked at me and said, “Uh, Mom, it is ok to call them orthotics.” Oh. :) All that to say, the biggest lesson you will learn over the next few years is that Jilly is NOT operating in YOUR paradigm. She will be accepting of the things she NEEDS if you are….but keep putting the glitter on, my friend, glitter does make everything better!!
