InstaFriday

Instagram lets us capture the simplest moments in our week and just when I think I had a lousy week, InstaFriday reminds me I am woefully wrong.

I really like my little family.

They’re my favorite.

Last Friday was Pi Day, and like the nerdy family we are, we indulged in the most ginormous, insanely rich, slice of pie we could think of.

Andy ran by Jack’s, a small local restaurant known for their giant pie slices, for a slice of chocolate mousse pie.

That’s ONE SLICE.

Lucy was elated.  She’d been coveting that slice all day as it sat in the fridge.

And Jill?  I have video of her SHOVELING heaping forkfuls bigger than her mouth into her face.  I took two bites and then couldn’t anymore.

Overall, Pi Day was a whopping success.  And I didn’t even have to bake anything.  Score.

Our alma mater, while consistently ranking in one of the best schools in the west for academics, is let’s say…a bit lacking in the sports department.  (This might be because…at least when I was there…I witnessed professors not changing even test dates for athletes.  Game or no game.  “You came here to go to school.  If you want to pass this class, you take the test on Friday.  If you’d rather play in the game, you are free to do that, but you will get a zero on the exam.  Don’t send the coach in to talk to me.  I’ll just tell him the same thing.  It’s your choice, Son.”)

Andy, the long suffering basketball season ticket holder, has been going to games where they win some, and lose a few for a decade.  I quit going after a couple of years.  It was too depressing.

But imagine the excitement when the team made it to the Big West Championship game.  My boys hauled a three hour drive to watch a 2 hour game…and drove three hours back to support their team.  My six year old didn’t fall asleep until after midnight.

If you can’t tell, they won.  And the boys got to storm the court.

In a string of Christmas Miracles, Cal Poly also won a tie breaker type of game earlier this week, and for the first time in school history is actually playing in the March Madness situation going on right now.  Tonight, we’re all heading to a local Irish pub/restaurant and watching the game with friends.  Lu and Hen want to come too.  I suppose they should watch history as it unfolds, no?

Footie jamas, a vintage Pepsi machine, and a chi chi.

The Porkchop adores the chi chis.

I’m not sure the feeling is mutual, but they tolerate him pretty well.

Also, even with an enclosure, Hattie escapes every single day.  So that she can lay her one precious green egg in the Pepsi fridge.  Every day.  Three eggs in the coop.  One in the fridge.  I’d think it was a lot more quaint if she didn’t destroy my plant with her big chicken butt.

I got that swirly, cast iron candle holder from Pottery Barn for my birthday a million years ago.  In our old house, it hung above our fireplace, but during the move, we managed to break at least half of the glass cups.  So the whole thing sat in the girls’ closet for the last 6 years because I hadn’t yet found votive holders that would work.  That, and I kept forgetting to look.

Finally, I set it out to give away to Goodwill.  And I was bummed.  Because I really liked it, and it was expensive.  And a gift.

Until Henry: “Mom, I think mason jars will fit in those rings…”

Why yes.  Yes they do.  And since this swirly wrought iron look is a little outdated now, I thought it might look good on the patio.  With succulents.

I am in LOVE.

Nothing comes between a Porkchop and his Girl Scout cookies.

The other day I found him precariously teetering…one fat foot…on top of that green lidded vinegar jug.  You can imagine how that ended.

Related: baby long johns.  The end.

This girl was MISERABLE the last couple of days.

Just whimpering and crying and frustrated and throwing thrashing fits.  But with no fever, no visible symptoms, and even Tylenol not changing anything, it left this mama grasping at straws with how to help her.

We deal with a lot of different things between Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.  But more often than not, and especially as she gets older, her being non-verbal is the hardest.  It’s exhausting.  For both of us.  For all of us.

“Moooommmmm….please make her stop crying!”  “I know, guys.  I wish I could.”

Finally, I took her to the pediatrician to see if he might help me deduce what her problem was; and while I was waiting to be seen, I saw this quote in Parents Magazine.

It’s not that there was anything majorly wrong with her.  But that there are Slap In The Face Days sometimes.  Days when it doesn’t just feel like Our Normal.

It just feels Hard.

But life is still amazing.  And beautiful.  And mundane.

The doctor thought her ears looked a little pink, so he prescribed her an antibiotic.  She was back to her usual goofy, nerdy self the very next day.  I don’t know if one round of meds fixed her up…if it was an earache at all…or something else that coincidentally got better…but, I’m glad she’s back.  I do, though, wish I knew what had been hurting her so much for two days.  Maybe someday we’ll know.  For now, I’ll enjoy her dorkiness.  And keep doing schoolwork with the brother.

Your turn!  How was your week?  Join us and link up!

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I love the mason jar and succulents! How awesome that you got to keep that candle holder and upcycle it into something else! Its perfect for your backyard. And I love me some #naughtyporkchop. I show my pictures to my mom all the time and tell her if I was ever blessed with a boy, I hope he is just as loveable and curious as your porkchop. Have a great weekend and I’m saying a prayer that Jilly is on the mend.
