Recipe: Make Your Own Pizza

Friends of ours first introduced us to the whole Make Your Own Pizza thing.

This is a fun meal to make for a big-ish group.

It’s a nice change up to BBQ hot dogs and burgers.

The only downside is that you kinda have to eat in shifts.  Which is totally fine in an informal hang-y out-y kind of setting.

Now, you may be thinking: “YOU MAKE YOUR OWN DOUGH???!!! I am NOT doing that!!!”

Do not be alarmed.

I have three kids 3 and under.

You really think I’d take on something time consuming???

Okay, scratch that.

But really, this is crazy easy.

But here’s the trick: remembering to make the dough ahead of time.

It needs at least 2 hours to rise.

Don’t think you can start this at 5:45 right before your husband pulls into the driveway.

Not that I ever do dinner like that.

DOUGH:

2 3/4 to 3 3/4 cups of all purpose flour

2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast (1 package)*

1 cup warm water

1 tbls. cooking oil

1/4 tsp. salt

1.  In a large bowl, combine 1 1/4 c. flour, yeast, & salt.

2.  Add water & oil.

3.  Beat on low 30 seconds.

4.  Mix in as much of the remaining flour to make moderately stiff dough that is smooth & elastic.

5.  Divide in half.  Cover.

6.  Refrigerate 2-24 hours.

Bake decorated pizzas at 425 degrees 10-15 minutes.

(*do yourself a favor and buy yeast at costco and not in those little packages.  it is SOOOOO much cheaper.  you’ll never use it all before it expires, but it’s cheaper to buy in bulk and throw away a bunch of it, than it is for those dumb little paper pouches.)

BEST, SUPER EASY SAUCE:

15 oz. can tomato sauce

6 oz. can tomato paste

1 tbls. oregano

1 1/2 tsp. garlic salt

1 tsp. paprika

Mix together.

I usually double, triple…or even quadruple the dough recipe.  People always use way more dough than you’d guess.

And I usually double the sauce.  Just because I’m neurotic about running out of stuff.

Set up a table with your dough, sauce and a rainbow of toppings:

pepperoni, ham, pineapple, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, sausage, grilled onions, roasted garlic, goat cheese…

whatever!

The more the merrier!

Sprinkle cookie sheets with corn meal so that the dough doesn’t stick…and it gives it a nice crunchy flavor.

Make this for dinner some night this week.

Why not?

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

We make those all the time! :) Love it, especially when we have lots of peeps to feed.

The only thing I do differently is that I shape out the dough into little pizza shapes and partially bake them (for 10 minutes or so) before anyone gets there. It cuts down on the waiting time later when you have lots of people waiting to eat! :)

you’re making me hungry! Phillip bought unglazed tiles for the oven so he could make the perfect dough but we used to just cook it on the grill (you have to flip it once before you top it.) What a great idea for a large group pizza party! Thanks for sharing.
