Dia De Los Muertos at Disneyland #HalloweenTime

Let me just start by saying that I have a very loose understanding of the tradition behind Dia De Los Muertos.

Sure, I can google it, but that doesn’t mean I get it fully.

But what I do know is that when I saw the display at Disneyland, I swooned.

Vibrant, bold, bright COLOR!!!!

And the way that the plants were layered in those containers.  I 100% took these photos with the express purpose of documenting the plant combinations so I could copy them at home.

And then it was all so pretty, I had to share.

I feel like perhaps I should have been born Mexican.

BECAUSE ALL THAT COLOR.

I mean, sure there were skeletons hanging around too, but they were pretty friendly with their guitar playing and such.

Besides, there was bunting.  And you can’t be all that scary with rainbow bunting.  It’s like a law of the universe.

Okay, she was maybe a little creepy.  But she’s not smiling like her musical counterparts.

Also, she’s like 8 feet tall.

But her earrings are pretty amazing.

A fun Halloween treat was the free face painting in this section of the park.

Which, as you can imagine, free anything at a theme park is mostly unheard of.  Also, as you can imagine, I have paid for face painting exactly zero times, because that’s just not how I roll.  So this was a fun treat for the kids.

Lucy picked the skull lady with pink flowers for eyes.  Because clearly there was no other acceptable choice for my girliest of girls.

And I opted for a mustachioed skull man wearing a giant red sombrero on my arm.  Which, sadly, I didn’t take a picture of soon enough, and a trip along the Grizzly River Run created a smeary mess.

The icing on the cake?  This little corner of Frontierland is almost always passed right by.  People walk by it without even realizing it’s there, so it made for a quiet little retreat amid the busy park crowds, and we didn’t have to wait or feel rushed for time when getting our free paintings.

(This little corner is also home to one of our favorite eating spots in Disneyland: Rancho Del Zocalo Restaurante.  Truthfully, not so much because the food is amazing, but because it’s typically a quiet, low key way to recharge and it’s one of the few, or only?, places in the park with free refills.  Also, it’s well shaded.  So it’s a great place to sit and take a break midday.  Write that down.)

It was fun to see the Disney twist on what can otherwise be a super scary and increasingly gory holiday.  Just a wee bit creepy.  Enough to be Halloween-y, but not terrifying and bloody.  I like that combo.

Have you been to Disneyland (or Disney World) during the #HalloweenTime festivities?

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post, however we did receive tickets to Mickey’s Halloween Party and one night’s stay at the Disneyland Hotel.  All opinions mine.  Not that I could really lie about my undying love of RAINBOW COLOR.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

You got some great shots of the arrangements! We *love* the Day of the Dead display at Disneyland. This is our favorite time of year at the park, followed closely with Christmas in New Orleans Square. That’s another explosion of color!
