Shared Girl’s Room

Little by little, I’m making this house our home.

Lucky for me, the previous owner had all creamy white walls so I wasn’t dealing with crazy colors that I couldn’t bear to look at.  That being said, I kinda felt like I was losing my mind without the bright, happy colors that I crave.

So, in the least logical order, I actually painted the kids’ rooms first (I’ll share the boys’ room tomorrow).  This makes no sense because the kids’ rooms are kinda off to the side, and not even visible from the main living areas of the house.  One would think I would start with the places we spend the most time.  Except that kids’ room paint colors are the funnest (most fun?) of them all to pick out.

The girls’ last room had pale pink walls with a big black and white stripey type of thing.  I really loved it and thought it would work well as they grew up.  But since I had a blank slate in the new house, I thought I’d go with something girly, maybe a little more grown up, and not pink.

{Note: I’ll make note of where I got stuff throughout the post.  Not because a single thing is sponsored, but to save myself a few emails.}

A friend of mine walked in and said “If someone said ‘decorate a room to look like Jeannett, this is what I would picture.  All of this.  Every single bit of it.  It just screams you.'”

I’ll take that as a compliment.

We got a bunk bed from Craigslist for cheap right before we moved.  I’m not in love with the creaky metal and I’d like to eventually get a nice wooden version, but this works for now.  I don’t love making it, but I do love how much space it saves in the room.

Also, please note how we had to put a bed rail up.  Because the railing on the bunk went to exactly the height of the mattress.  Meaning, Lucy would for sure come tumbling down.  Said bed rail makes making a top bunk even more impossible than usual.  Which I didn’t think was possible.

I felt that Jill needed to be moved to more of a big girl bed, not so much because she was physically too big for her toddler bed, but because I really want to honor her dignity and I don’t want to accidentally treat her like a baby even though it can sometimes be easy to forget she’s five years old.

Particularly because her  twin sister has been in a standard sized bed for a while now.  And she sees that.  And I think she understands that.

(Initial pillows from Land of Nod.  Plush Ariel from Disney Store.)

I think she basically loves having the big full sized bed all to herself.

And there have been a few nights when Lucy has slept with her in it.  Which, I cannot express to you how much joy that simple act brings me.  I have grieved the loss of a traditional sisterhood for my twins.  So to see a brief glimpse of it taking shape, even though it’s different than I imagined, is Beauty.

You better believe I had Andy pull down the chandelier I had hanging in their previous room.

Because hello.

girlroom2

Lu gets the top bunk.

Which she loves.

I do not love changing the sheets on the top bunk, but I only do it when Andy is home and can help me.  I’d lose my ever loving mind if I tried to do it solo.

The wall color is the perfect shade of aqua.  Not too blue.  Not too green.  Not too light.  Not too dark.

I’m in love with it.

The blinds in the room are atrociously heavy and never go up (or down for that matter) without you wanting to punch something and/or curse like a sailor.  We left them up for now, but we are exclusively using these nice and simple white curtains (from Target).  They don’t make the room dark, but my kids have never been ones to care that the sun is out before coming to bother me  join me in the wee hours of the morning anyway.

Lucy found a rock in the back and painted it “to match her room” and then artfully displayed her rock alongside the roses she clipped and put in a little vase.  When the flowers wilt, she tosses them out and replaces them with fresh flowers from the garden.

A girl after my own heart.  (I always and forever have fresh flowers on my coffee table.  It’s one of my Things.)

You Are My Sunshine art by Barn Owl Primitives. Scrappy bunting by Meg.

I also just ordered this for the room.  It had to be done.

You Are My Fave banner from CM Handmade.

The ruffled bedskirt I made for Lucy’s twin bed wouldn’t fit on the bottom full sized bunk, so I did what any self respecting woman would do: I cut the ruffled part off and duct taped it right onto the metal slat on the bed.

Yes.  Yes I did.

Embroidered birth announcements made by my MIL.

A free printable alphabet that I printed several years ago and couldn’t begin to guess from where.  (Sorry.)

God is Good.  Always. from The Sign Cafe.

Vintage Gussy little girl’s purses and a stamped banner from Lisa Leonard.

(Jewelry boxes on clearance at Kohl’s and the shelf was from a yard sale.)

girlroom12

A bunch of free printables tacked up with FABRIC tape.  Fabric!  The best.

(Be Kind, Whatever is Lovely, Brave Girl, and Oh My Darling prints from Danielle Burkleo.  Make Today Awesome from Joy’s Hope.  Fabric tape from Michael’s.)

girlroom13 So there ya go.

My girls’ room.  All happy and bright and colorful.

Just the way I like it.

(Also, atypically tidy.  But Blog.)

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Yes, making the top bunk is THE WORST. I have my 8 year old do it as I run around tucking and flattening and yelling out directions. It’s a good thing for her to learn. And she’s a tiny thing, no need boosting my hiney up there. And the duct taped bed skirt?? I’m totally a member of that club. No shame. Everything is so bright and happy. Well done!!

When I did bunk beds, I’d put the corners on, then go underneath and pull all the sides down. Made it easier, esp by the wall side.
I love the colors and the cuteness of it all. Jilly looks like she does enjoy her big girl bed. Can’t wait to see all the other rooms. Love what you do to make your house your home. hugs

Their room looks beautiful! Check out http://www.beddys.com. It’s going to change your life with making the kids beds. One of the creators is my friend. The sheets and comforter all get zipped up and the bed is made! It’s awesome!
