Doll Wheelchair – EEK!

zu4553816_main_tm1393364269 (1)Good Morning friends!

Just a super quick note this to share this…I just couldn’t resist!

Remember how I wrote a post for WhatToExpect.com titled “9 Kinder Ways to Discuss Special Needs With Your Kids“?

One of the tips was:

Do incorporate toys into regular play that serve as teaching lessons. As you buy toys for your child (typically developing or not), consider offering playthings that normalize the differences in this big, beautiful world we live in…Toy manufacturers are embracing the myriad of sweet faces in our midst, so be on the lookout for ways to incorporate those into imaginative play. When your child has been wheeling around a Barbie in a chair for months, meeting a real-life friend in a similar chair will be a lot less scary.

It is SO HARD to find toys that highlight special needs…especially without a huge price tag because it’s considered a specialty item.  So imagine my delight when I saw that this doll wheelchair set was on Zulily for $26.99!  I realize it’s really intended for broken dolly bones, but I don’t care.  Same point.

This little chair is for the larger “American Girl” type/sized dolls…which I would bet most of you with little girls in your home have at least one of.  They also have a TON of really fun doll accessories in that same sale.  Lucy’s been begging for a doll highchair so I think this little wooden one will be a perfect birthday present!  (Now to keep it hidden until July!)

I’m working on a “real” post for today so please be sure to check back in a few hours, but for now I couldn’t resist sharing!

And like all Zulily products, it’s only available for a few days and on a first come, first served basis.  FYI.

Would you ever consider buying a wheelchair for your child’s dolls?  Why or why not?  (Seriously.  I’m curious.)

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I totally would! I remember my great grandma needing a walker to get around, and when johnny was younger and could still fit into strollers, kids didn’t really notice him unless he had a seizure. now that he’s in a wheelchair, little kids do stare a bit. I bought some toms from zuilly and loved it. I contemplated buying some scarves because they were a good price, but I really need to be able to touch a scarf before I buy it…so I skipped.

This is awesome! I only have one child, a 6 year old boy. He does have a baby doll, a dress-me Jake doll and a La La Loopsy doll, but he’s not into them enough that it would be worth it for me to purchase a doll wheelchair. A few years ago it might have been worth it, but the older he gets, the less interest he has in his dolls. But if I had a younger daughter, I would absolutely buy a doll wheelchair. What a great idea!

Jeanette: I think they have something at Walmart too, in the toy section. Just in case any of your readers can’t get over to zuliliy fast enough. It’s made for their brand of AG knockoffs.

Yes! My daughter asked for the AG one for Christmas two years ago. It is one of her most played with toys.

My daughter would love this! She spent the better part of a day trying to make crutches and a wheelchair for her koala bear toy, because she said he has a broken leg. And your advice on discussing special needs with your kids is wonderful. I love the idea of focusing on similarities. Your piece should be required reading for every parent!

Jeanette, we have the American girl wheel chair and my girls have played a lot with it over the last couple years! My older girl had to have her appendix out on Christmas Day last year and the younger one took it to the hospital for her! They always play that they have a ” handicapped” friend and it just makes my heart feel so good to see that kind of inclusion and understanding! Perhaps some of what I say is really sinking in?! You need one of these!

I think this is fantastic! I would definitely incorporate toys like this for my kiddos.
