Every week we tell the stories behind the pictures.

Every week we see the little glimmers of beauty and fun, and realize…hey, our week wasn’t so bad after all!

The girls’ birthday is today.

FOUR!

We celebrated last Saturday by having a fancy princess day.

Lucy was in Lucy Heaven.

Jilly couldn’t keep from wiggling her toes, but she showed off her purple piggies to anyone willing to see.

I can’t believe they are four.  Already.

I took lots more pictures of our special day.  It’ll be its own post.

Since they weren’t getting a real party, I made them their own special cakes.

Jilly has only a handful of words…”fish” being one of them.

Naturally, The Little Mermaid is her favorite movie…her favorite ride at Disneyland…and her favorite princess.  When we found this cake pan, we knew it HAD to be Ariel.

As for Hello Kitty…Lu has no concept of the pop culture reference.  To Lucy, it’s a cat.  With a bow.  Perfection.

My dilemma: Henry struggled with reading…which meant he disliked it…which meant he wouldn’t do any of it…which meant he didn’t practice…which meant he wasn’t getting any better at it…which meant he continued to struggle.

Solution: Thanks to a suggestion from a reader on my Facebook page, I pay him a quarter for each BOB bookhe reads (we have three sets of them), and once he gets through those, I’ll pay him $1 for every “regular” book off the bookshelf he reads.

Kid’s made three bucks already.

Whatever works, man.  Whatever works.

(And it’s working…he’s getting it SO much faster already.)

Not more than twenty minutes after I published this post, I cheerfully asked my neighbor when his baby was due.

“We lost her.”

Cue tears and dismay.

So, I took my own advice.

Which, was a bit of a challenge simply because I don’t really know them at all.  In fact, I didn’t even know her name.  I didn’t know if they had allergies.  If she was vegetarian.  Vegan.  Gluten free.  Or just hated tacos.

But it’s the thought that counts, right?

She came over the next day.

And we cried together in my driveway.

Heaven will be amazing.

We are a video game free zone around here (so far).

But we pulled out the old skool OG Nintendo.

Now THESE are video games.

Angry mushrooms are way better than birds.

My friend Penny tagged me in this image on Facebook a while back and I keep meaning to post it.

I have no idea where it’s from, but I feel like it should be cross stitched or made into a plaque.

Henry’s been at skate camp all week (tough life, right?), and the fun thing about social media is that I can see what he’s doing even when I’m not there.

The boys tagged me in this video.

Henry has watched it about 9,396 times.  He’s really proud of himself.

It’s fun.

We finished up swim lessons.

Jill is my little fish.

Girl LOVED it.

Love that kid.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

What a full, wonderful week! Lovely, simple glances into a week of your life, and I loved it. The princess dress-up, the amazing cakes you made, encouraging your son to read, and being there for your neighbor in a time of need–all so precious.

Oh. Wow. I’m so sorry for your neighbor’s loss. This week marked what would have been my friend’s son’s third birthday. It is tough for everyone. He was 11 weeks when he passed on 9/11/10. Every time I hear of another baby taken too soon, my heart aches. I hope they find peace.

Hello Jeanette. I found your site through Amanda at Chaos and Coffee. I linked up on Saturday and totally meant to leave a comment. I feel horrible that I somehow forget. I love your site and thank you for the chance to link-up. I don’t have little children in my home but still enjoy sharing my week through photos and then getting to know others through the pictures they share. It’s such a delight! Loved all your pictures.
    Blessings.

I came across your blog and found your article on InstaFriday very informative, you have some great advice for people to follow, I especially like the story about the family who lost a loved one. I recently lost my father and was chosen to do the reflection CD at the funeral service. At this point I realised I didn’t have enough photos to remember all the things we did. Note to self is to take MANY MORE photo’s of my kids and family to improve the memories.
