Skate Design

I love design details.

I love looking for them.  I love finding them.  I love seeing when people take the time out to incorporate them.  It’s kinda like a treasure hunt.

Maybe the Average Joe doesn’t even notice them at all, but it makes my heart swoon when I see the extra effort put in to pay attention to bitty things.

My favorite design elements ever?

Repetition.  Color.  Texture.

Be still my heart.

And you know what?  Those boys at the skate shop have an eye for design.  The average kid that walks in the shop probably doesn’t even see it, but…I do.  And I often wander around not looking at the t-shirts and shoes…but at the fantastic use of texture and color.  The skate boys probably hate that I take their manly shop and use girly terms like that, but you know, I’m a girl.

Since I’m there…a lot sometimes…I brought along my camera and asked if they would mind if I acted all creeper paparazzi status and played around.  Lucky for me, they put up with my weirdness and just ignored me while I pretended I knew what I was doing.

So while my boy did this, I snapped some pics of my favorite elements in the shop.

The different colored and stained wood wall???

I die.

All the color and texture and depth and…the shoes all lined up in perfect rows? I’m jealous that they dreamed this up.

Makes me want to pull down the map mural in the boys’ room and do this instead.

Fancy design experts would describe this as “a juxtaposition of natural and industrial design elements”.

Whatever it’s called, I love it.

So clever.

Rainbow helmets all in a row.

Which is good because he needs to protect his noggin too.

IMG_8788

Bright white surfboards with a touch of neon.

IMG_8791

These clear jewel toned wheels slay me.

If they weren’t so expensive, I’d make something like this for the boys’ room.

Or this.

The deck wall is pretty awesome too.

Even if it’s all lame zombies and skulls and such.

Boys are so weird.

He’s asking for a new board for his birthday.

With a set of those clear wheels.

In green.

Obviously.

IMG_8841

Even though my favorite of all time is saturated color, I love this wood tone board.

And the clear wheels.

Gorgeous.

IMG_8835

These are my favorite.

I need one in aqua.

Assuming, of course, I could actually stand on one.

Which I cannot.

(Those wheels have LED lights in them that light up while you roll around!)

IMG_8855

Baby TOMS all in a row.

IMG_8843

Rows and rows of big person TOMS.

(Although these should totally be organized in ROY G BIV order as far as I’m concerned.)

IMG_8834

More pretty wheels.

Yes, pretty.

I love that he’s not too old to give his poor old mom a thumbs up.

Someday (soon) he’ll be way too cool to acknowledge me in public.

I’ll eat it up while I still can.

IMG_8852

Did you know that TOMS makes sunglasses too?

I want the Charity: Water ones.

Except that I sit on/lose/scratch up sunglasses too often to pay more than ten bucks for them.

Stickers!

Have I ever mentioned that the name of the shop is OneWay Boardshop?  And their logo is an arrow pointing up?

As in, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14-:6)?

I know.  The best.

Reason 483 I support the place.

Quick story about the shirt Henry is wearing: for Decades Day last week, he was a 1950’s greaser.  Against my better judgement, I got him dressed before breakfast, and the white t-shirt he had on got jam on it immediately.  I had enough time to toss it in the washer and as I left to take Lucy to preschool, I hollered for him to get his shirt out of the dryer before Dad took him.  When I picked him up from school, I realized that the kid had grabbed one of JILL’S white t-shirts.  As in, it was a midriff!  He had worn his little sister’s shirt to school all day!  It was so bad, I couldn’t bear to watch him skate around in it.  So, he got a new t-shirt.  Grrrr.  (Andy: I thought the shirt looked small but we were in a hurry and I figured you knew what you were doing…)

So it turns out that Henry’s little hobby has some fun stuff for mom too.

Who knew that skateboarder boys could have their own Pinterest worthy shop?!  I love that it inspires me to consider design from a more masculine perspective.  I’m actually totally jealous now.  I wish I had a shop I could decorate.  Quick, what can I sell?

*P.S. this is not a sponsored post.  In fact, not only am I not getting paid in any way for this post, it cost ME money.  Ahem.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I love this post. Like, love love this post! I grew up in So Cal in the dessert, where the only thing to do was skate and ride dirt bikes it seemed. So, this totally reminds me of high school. And, now my little guy is trying so hard to learn to skate. We’ve actually been using it as inspiration for his “big boy” room this summer! So many pretty colors and textures.
