The Book of Faces

Sooooo….I have this love/hate sitch with Facebook.

It kinda drives me batty…actually, Facebook itself is fine…it’s the status updates some people choose to broadcast to the Earth that drive me batty.  I shake my head and cringe a lot.

I really really really wish there was a #firstworldproblems button.  Like, for the time someone I followed complained that the toilet paper wasn’t perforated enough and wouldn’t tear properly.

I can’t make this stuff up.

But, I also laugh a lot.  People are FUNNY.

From a blog perspective, I find I use it as my casual Google Reader.  I like a lot of FB pages for blogs that I like but might not want to read every single post…and when I see something that catches my eye, I’ll click over and check it out.  And thanks to many of my friends, I’ve read some great posts I wouldn’t have otherwise been exposed to.

So I guess FB isn’t so bad after all.  (Especially after I went through and hid some of the worst offenders.  Now it’s actually pleasant and void of cheap TP rants.)

Anyway…the point of this is a little bit of housekeeping.  You might have heard of this already, so I apologize if this is old hat and you’re bored already.

Turns out that with the new timeline switch, Facebook managed to complicate things.  I’m not even going to pretend that I understand it, but basically, just because you like a FB page, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to show up in your feed!  They have some fancy algorithm for what actually shows up in your feed, and you could be missing out on my earth-shattering updates!  The horrors!

(Why follow me on Facebook?  Well, sometimes I link to some stuff I think you would like too…sometimes I link to sales you might want to bat your eyelashes at your husband about, and sometimes I update you on things that are too little to really do a full post about.  Also, I say inane things from time to time.  Sue me.)

Lucky for everyone, it’s a quick and easy fix:

Untitled-1

1) Log into your Facebook account

2) Search for Life Rearranged in the search bar doohicky.  (Like my page if you haven’t already)

3) When my page comes up, hold your mouse over the LIKE button.

4) Select Show in News Feed from the pull down menu.

Done.

Do this for any other “fan page” you want to be sure you see.

If I was fancy, I would have some giveaway to entice you to do all of these things.  But let’s face it…I don’t even have a cool cover picture.  I need to get with the Facebook program.  Later.  When I have time.

Anyway, that is all.

Happy Saturday!

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I actually have done this to many of the fan pages I follow, yet they still don’t show up in my feed. So I went in and clicked the “Get Notifications” (right above “Show in News Feed” and that worked! Just an FYI.

I don’t understand the switch to posting the links in the first comment. I don’t know why people do it, but personally I find it extremely annoying. I spend a lot of time on facebook from my phone, and sometimes if there are a lot of additional comments it becomes nearly impossible to find the link. There have even been a few times where I have given up because it is too difficult.

Here’s the reason for posting the link in the comments (which I don’t like either…but I do it on my FB page too): the way that FB decides what shows up in peoples’ feeds is based on a bunch of different things. For whatever reason, when a link is included within the status, it is given a lower priority and therefore, shows up in fewer feeds. I always assumed that if I had 2,000 FB likes, that meant that 2,000 people would see my update (assuming they scrolled all the way through their feed). NOT SO. Boo. On FB “fan” pages, they actually tell us how many people saw a status update. So, for example, when I would link directly to my post within the status update, only 283 people saw the update at all. But once I linked in the comments, 750 people saw it! I really don’t like doing it, but it’s a pretty significant difference. I truly don’t know why FB has to complicate what should be a very simple thing. Ugh.

Unfortunately, those options don’t exist for pages you like from your blog account. Only from personal accounts. :(
