Simple.  Silly.  Everyday.

Looking back on our week and the bitty moments that make it all worth it.

Join us.

Our stay at the hospital is finally over.

It was a long week.

LONG.

And hard.

On so many levels.

I’m trying to put my thoughts together on the experience.

Tomorrow.

For now, I love this picture.

Diddy Riese is one of those places in Westwood that EVERYONE knows and loves.

Apparently it’s what UCLA students pretty much live off of.

There was a line out the door and down the street.

The cookies were good.  And they were 35 cents each!

Plus, one of the nurses told me that Diddy Riese cookies were zero calorie.

If a nurse says it, it must be true right?

We are really glad to be back home.

This guy has slept a lot since we’ve been back.

He napped minimally the entire week…by the end he was beyond hysterical.

So it was great to see this smile again.

And in a Transformers shirt no less.

My birthday was last Tuesday.

Our first day in the hospital.

Luckily, I’m 32 now so things like birthdays are kinda blah even had I been home for it.

But it was extra nice to get home to some happy mail that included this adorable selvage bracelet.

I love simple, heartfelt gifts.

They make me happy.

I also realllly like these Disney Little People.

My kids won’t play with them…but I still want to buy them.

Because they are squishable cute.

Maybe Owen will chew on them or something and I can justify the purchase?

Re-entry after a very stressful week in the hospital has been ROUGH.

I want to be all positive and happy for you guys, but I’d be painting an untrue picture.  And that’s not really my thing.  I want to be real and authentic.  Not grumpy and whiny…but real just the same.  Sometimes that can be a hard balance.

We had planned on being back Thursday.  We got home late the following Monday night instead.

Here was Tuesday:

-Crazy hair day at Henry’s school.  I forgot.  Completely.  Until he told me that he was the ONLY kid in his class that didn’t participate.  He didn’t seem to mind and told me it was okay and he wasn’t sad…but my mama heart broke that I had forgotten.

-Immunization records due to Henry’s school.  I forgot.  Completely.  Cue phone calls and fax numbers and assorted technological drama that turned this into an hours long debacle.

-I had signed up to bring snack to Lucy’s school.  I forgot.  Completely.  Her teacher said it was no big deal, but I’m secretly paranoid that she thinks I’m the most disheveled SAHM she’s ever met.

-“Mommy!  Someone’s knocking at the door!”  “It’s 9 am!  What?!”  I had a meeting with Jill’s new service coordinator scheduled.  I forgot.  Completely.  So I met this woman for the first time ever and had a meeting with her…in my pajamas.  Lovely.

Remind me to pack my planner with me next time I go anywhere.

And the next day was Halloween.

I felt like I was drowning.

So when Henry begged to carve pumpkins (as he had for weeks now)…and even said “But Mom!  The whole rest of the Earth carved their pumpkins already!!!” my mom guilt kicked in and I gave in.

Plus, he promised he would do it by himself.

While I was upstairs putting Owen down for a nap, I came back to find that he had found a Sharpie, drawn a face and had cut about half of it out.

Awesome.  Because I really dislike carving pumpkins.

“Mom…I’m cutting and it’s hard so it’s exercising my arms…so I can get really strong to be able to carry all the candy I’m getting tonight!”

Kid has high hopes.

I scrambled to get our costumes completed.

Unfortunately (in this case) I had planned ahead and actually had each costume about 90% done…I had planned on getting the last 10% of finishing touches together when I got back from the hospital…on Thursday.  Or so I thought.

So I was stuck running around like a chicken with my head cut off to get it all finished up.  I was too close to throw in the towel and just run to Target for pre-mades (which would have been more logical considering a hospital stay that lasted more than twice as long as we had planned).

But it was good because I do believe O made the cutest Yoda in the history of the Universe.

Did you hear about The Happy Day Project?

Are you in?

Yes?

Please say yes…it’s fun!  I promise!

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Some seasons in life are just like “that” – this too shall pass. Love Owen’s yoda costume – precious! And Henry’s logic about making his arms strong for carrying candy is adorable. Thanks for sharing the bits and pieces of your life :-).

You’re not the only momma that feels totally guilty about missing Halloween events. We went to Charleston, SC Friday through Tuesday, driving home through Hurricane Sandy snow in WV. My kids never did get to carve pumpkins. I never even got the pumpkins. Costumes were done at least, and the candy fairy was prepared, but we just skipped jack-o-lanterns this year. Oh well!

I understand that mom guilt completely. Don’t beat yourself up though, because anyone who went through a week like yours, would forget too. Praying for you and your family.

Glad you are home. Happy Belated Birthday. I have 3 former preemies, my twins have mild CP which all that means for us is lots of different therapies and while our journey is very different I know what it feels like to have Mommy guilt over all we are NOT doing. I’d like to point out that you are doing A LOT also. Most Mommies (including myself) can’t imagine a hospital stay like the one you just endured much less with a new baby in tow. You are awesome and anyone (teacher or service coordinator) who can’t see that is CARAAAZZZYYY. I am sure they understand all that you have going on. I space out on things even when life is “in order”. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND and I hope you manage to get some much deserved rest.

SO GLAD you are home how! SO SAD that you feel SO BAD about forgetting all those things. Seriously. You had a lot going on. You get a forgetfulness pass for, like, the whole week, no, MONTH! YEAR! But I have forgotten most of, no, ALL OF those things, and I have no child that is at a hospital that I am trying to induce an epileptic episode for. // Been praying for you this week.

I had a crap week that involved a sick kid, probate court, demented people and attorneys blowing smoke in my general direction. I really really dislike conservatorships, probate court, and smoke… Some day I’ll bore you with the glam life of a county APS social worker.

On a lighter note, today was my day off and I had a nice adult beverage lost night to wind down my week. Happy day!

Thought of you and your fam and sent many prayers and hugs your way.
    Best,
    Caryl
