For the Love of Hooks

I recently realized that I have a weird fascination/obsession/love/call it what you will…with hooks.

A strange thing to be intrigued by.  I know this.

But I’ve discovered something: having three kids in a two story house means that you a) want things easily accessible…and not have to constantly run upstairs to get/put away stuff; and b) KEEP STUFF OFF THE FLOOR.

As a result, I’ve been inadvertantly drilling holes into every wall in my house to hang hooks.

Pretty hooks.  Plain hooks.  Fun hooks.  Hooks, hooks, hooks.  (That that Dr. Seuss!)

I didn’t know that I was hoarding hooks until I came home with a hook…a pretty one…my favorite hook so far…and HAD ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE TO PUT IT.  Nor did I have any idea what I would be hanging on it.  And so it sat on the counter for weeks.  Weeks people.

Until I finally made up a reason to hang it.

I saw this pretty enameled metal hook at Pier One and had to have it.  Had to.  I just didn’t know why.

(They have one in different colors on clearance!  ACK!)

Then it hit me:

To keep my camera nice and handy right there in the living room and high enough up to keep away from bitty hands!

Besides, it matches my ruffled cammy strap perfectly.

Duh.

(I can justify anything folks.)

Because, you know, I don’t have 700 other hooks in my house…let’s take a peek:

Just to the right of the new fangled camera hook is another set of 4 hooks.  During the winter they hold raincoats for impromptu splashing in the rain…during the summer they hold all manner of random.

Alphabet hooks from Anthro in the playroom keep superhero capes, and assorted bags and backpacks easily accessible, but off the floor and out from the bottom of the toy chest.

(Oh Anthro and your expensive, gorgeous hooks!  Curse you!)

Hooks in my kitchen display aprons that were much too pretty to be hidden in drawers with the dish towels.

(And a sweet Lisa Leonard pendant reminds me to find joy even in the messy kitchen.)

My happy red Le Creuset mugs hang on bitty hooks under the cabinets.

Because like my aprons, some things are just too fun to hide away behind cupboard doors and drawers.

Tucked away in a corner of the kitchen lives this three-hooked beauty to hold my purses and keep sneaky little fingers away from my pack of gum and my chapstick.

I suppose these are actually pegs, but I’m decreeing that pegs are really from the hook family and therefore belong in this post…either way, we keep keys in one place right here.  Next to the dumping ground that is a little side counter in the kitchen…which is always a complete disaster of mail and emptied pockets.

I actually have about 5 or 6 of these hooks throughout the house for various things…in this case, a fun Pleated Poppy tea towel to wipe wet hands.

Simple hooks for hanging color coded kids towels.

Pink for LuLu, Green for Henry, and Purple for Jilly.  (Love this system.  Love.)

I even have hooks outside in the backyard!

These pre-weathered cast iron hooks keep beach towels and bathing suits outside for spring and summertime sprinkler fun.  I was forever running upstairs to get towels and suits…and now they just live outside!  (I have since bought cheapy $3.99 beach towels from Walmart so that I don’t care if they get sun bleached/ruined.)

And hooks live throughout my garden area to hang (empty) bird feeders…

…and flower pots.

I have absolutely no need for more hooks.

Yet, I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying more if they are cute enough.  (Keep me out of Anthro.  No, seriously.)

Because hooks are saving this mama’s sanity.

Have you embraced hooks?  You should.  Do it.  Now.  It will change your life.

(Okay not really, but I have a penchant for being dramatic.  Obvs.)

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Glad to see that I’m not the only one. I’ve got them all over the place and when we added a front entrance last spring I didn’t even put in a closet. Just lots of hooks. Noone used the old closet anyway C:

I love hooks too and seeing where you put some is giving me some ideas on where else I could put some hooks. We added a ton to bedrooms and bathrooms when we moved into our house. Oh, and the entry way. I should be more adventurous with my hook buying though. Mine are all pretty plain Jane. Thanks for sharing!

Your hook obsession is amazing and contagious! How do you get them all to hang really well, do you use special screws or nails?

Last night I was just thinking I needed hooks in the girls’ bathroom to know who used what towel. NEVER has it occurred to me to assign colors to my kids. Thank you for that very real tip.

You know I never did think about hooks much before this. We only have two sets in the kitchen and they are severely overloaded (cruelty to hooks) so you’ve inspired me to put some more up!

You’ve hooked me! ;) Totally cheesy, but I couldn’t help it. I. love. hooks. And, I don’t have hardly ANY in my house. I’m in LOVE with that gorgeous aqua 3 hook thingy, WHERE is that from? I even pinned the mugs on hooks, because I really really need to do that in my kitchen!
