The longer I’m a mom, the more I realize that my children’s memories will not be wrapped up in the elaborate crafts, non-stop hustle bustle of activities, or the perfectly executed events…but in the simple everyday moments of our days.
Ironically, I find that I have to be very deliberate and intentional about keeping things simple.
And that these everyday moments will be what I treasure too.
So here, we capture them. In all their grainy glory.
Cell phone style.
Can I tell you about the love Andy has for this truck?
It’s his baby.
He dusts it.
Regularly. No, seriously. (He also mops his garage floor, but that’s for another post.)
So you can imagine how my heart stopped when for reasons unbeknownst to me, Miss Lu decided to climb up onto the hood.
But not before I snapped a pic…and sent it to Daddy…who promptly had to be resuscitated.
The weather has been really nice lately (except it’s supposed to rain this weekend. boo!).
Warm spring weather, a trampoline, last year’s suits and the sprinkler underneath.
This is the magic I speak of.
Brother’s sandwich always tastes better.
Always.
Especially when it’s eaten outside on the bitty wooden picnic table and we’re still damp from playing in the water.
Naps rock on days like this.
These kids don’t know how good they have it.
The weather started cooling down a little, but still warm enough for an after nap treat of an ice pop outside.
Swinging our bare toes off the side of the trampoline and eating sugar flavored frozen ice? Simple, easy, and I’m a rockstar to them.
Confession: I live in what may be one of the most agriculturally rich areas in the WORLD.
Seriously. You can smell the different crops as you drive down the street. (Strawberries, yum. Cabbage, notsomuch.)
And this week was the first time I ever went to our local Farmer’s Market. I’m pathetic.
And you know what? It was bitty, unobtrusive, nothing fancy. No bounce houses, no elaborate set ups…just 20 or so pop up tents with every single fresh product you can imagine.
The kids and I split a couple of churros and wandered around getting samples from the various farmers and buying up farm fresh produce.
We will go back. Regularly. It was awesome.
This sign I saw at a church on the way to the market.
I don’t know why that’s so small, but in case you can’t read it, it says: “What the least I can believe & still be a Christian?”
I think I get what they are doing, and I give them the benefit of the doubt that they’re gonna bring some meaty scripture to those who might never have walked in the door otherwise…but it’s still gimmicky.
And me no likey gimmicky. Blech.
Having grown up in a culturally traditional Portuguese home, I had never had brussel sprouts.
Brussel sprouts just seemed like such an “American thing”. The only people I knew who made them were on Leave it to Beaver…and even then the kids scrunched their noses.
This has forever upset Andy…that in almost 10 years of marriage, I’ve never made him these things.
I thought I’d give them a try when I saw them at the Market…
Yeah, not my gig. Even roasted with butter and seasoning. I almost gagged.
You American folk can keep these gross little nuggets of nasty.
(Not that I’m not American…but if you grew up in a home that was of any other culture: mexican/italian/greek/cuban…you totally know what I mean.)
Wednesday was March 14th. You know, Pi Day. (get it: 3.14…Pi…?)
Look, between an engineer husband and a wife that is pregnant, it’s pretty much the year’s most perfect holiday.
It totally reminds me of this.
Give a four year old boy a meat tenderizer, a bag of graham crackers, and permission? Might be his favorite holiday too.
I searched for “pie” on Pinterest and let Henry scroll around and pick whatever he wanted us to make.
He chose this Candy Caramel Apple Pie.
And it was GOOD. I mean, serious good.
It took forever though. And wasn’t cheap to make. Easy…but time consuming…so it’s probably a special occasion pie.
But for sure make it for the next special day.
You know, like Tuesday. Whatever.
We’re supposed to not be spending money right now…but when P. Dub comes out with a new cookbook, I think it kinda doesn’t count.
Am I right on this ladies?
Have you gotten it yet? It’s purdy.
Alrighty, it’s your turn! What did you do this week?
Grab a button, link up and leave comment love on at least two other linker uppers! (Why? Because it’s nice. That’s all.)
Since my husband is a math teacher I should have celebrated Pi day by baking him a pie. I didn’t even think of doing that, maybe next year. My boys love to “help” in the kitchen. The bigger the mess the more fun! Have a great weekend!

My husband doesn’t like brussels sprouts either, but when I saute them in butter and top with bacon, he likes them :-)

Totally agree on the brussel sprouts..no matter how much butter, garlic, parmesan, etc they’re still nasty!
Lu on the Land Cruiser..TOO.MUCH! hahaha. The trampoline w/ the sprinkler underneath..rocks!
I totally miss nap days :((( and P-Dubs new book is on my wishlist, after I got her first one I seriously almost threw out every other one that I own!

that pie looks delish!
I can’t stand brussel sprouts-gross! The pie looks great though. I haven’t got the new cookbook yet-maybe the Easter Bunny will remember me too this year! We’ve had a crazy week and next week is spring break so I don’t see any calm in the near future. I think I need a grown-ups vacation.
My husband would FREAK OUT if my kids were on his truck too. What is it with boys and their trucks? You pie looks yummy. I’m linking up for the 2nd time. Thanks for hosting.

I think out of all of the InstaFriday posts you’ve done, this has got to be my favorite. I want to cmment about every single picture, but that will leave me with a novel of a comment. Just know..LOVE it all! I think my favorites have to be Little Lu on the truck, the too small bathing suits, and the reason you gave for Pi day being the best holiday for ya’ll. Hope you have a great weekend, even if its a rainy one! Slumber party in your pjs all weekend then, right?!

Oh my – that looks like one tasty pi!
Yeah – I thought I’d love the sprouts. They’re like a cross between a mini cabbage and broccoli. But I roasted them (arent all veggies good when roasted?) and they were bitter. Blech!!

Brussel sprouts…they gag me too. They are VERY popular here in the UK, and I just don’t get it!

Try steaming your brussel sprouts – we love them!
At Pike Place Market, one of the stalls has a sign saying “Little Green Balls o’ Death” on their brussel sprouts bin. ;)

I grew up in an Italian American household. Brussels sprouts… Yah those little beasts showed up on the table next to my spaghetti. Gag.
For pi day, my nerdy Hubster and his equally nerdy brother were on tv for a local show (SIL is a local tv reporter), enjoying a nerdy game of… Heroclix. ’nuff said…
Cheers,
Caryl
I pre-ordered PDub’s new cookbook and it was delivered to me by my wonderful UPS man as I got out of the car after a long day at work. I may or may not have had a glass of wine and read that baby from cover to cover. Best dinner ever.
That candy carmel apple pie looks delicious. I am officially coveting.
Nuggets of Nasty….Hahaha. That just seriously made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed reading your post. The farmers market sounds wonderful and that pie…whoa! it looks delicious! Have a great week!
