InstaFriday

Okay, so I’m fired.

Usually I post my InstaFriday on Thursday night…you know, for all you over achievers and east coasters.

But especially for those of  you on the east coast that are also overachievers.

Last night, I was all cozied up in my bed in that half asleep moment when I realized “InstaFriday!  I’m supposed to post tonight!”  But my bed was so so so cozy.

And I hoped you could all forgive me and understand why I chose to stay under my warm covers cuddling with my little boy than bounding out to write a post.

Without further ado, here is my InstaFriday!

I saw this mug at a Starbucks the other ay and fell in love.

Then, when I saw it was by Cath Kidston, I realized why my eye was immediately drawn to it.

It is the same print as on the napkins we used at a baby shower I co-hosted a few months ago!

That makes me feel fancy and like I’m a trendsetter.

Which is totally not the case AT ALL but don’t rain on a girl’s parade.

A yoga mat with all the poses printed on it.

I can totally do this one for like 1,000 breaths.

Bring it.

“You are NOT wearing that.  Go change.”

“But MOM!  I’m Kobe Bryant!!!”

“No, son.  No you are not.  GO CHANGE.  WE HAVE TO GO!”

“But why Mommy?!”

“For starters because it’s 55 degrees outside and you’ll freeze to death.”

“But MOM!  I LOOK COOL!”

“YOU ARE WEARING YOUR SISTER’S HEADBAND!  I love you so much, but you can’t wear that today.  Please go change NOW.”

“But MOM!  I’m cool like Kobe!”

“Look, when you are a majillionaire like Kobe you can wear whatever you please.  But for now, I’m the boss and I’m telling you to change.  At least a pair of pants.  A sweatshirt.  Anything.  Just not that.”

Before you rake me over the coals for not letting my kid “express himself” please keep in mind that it was really cold outside, he’s worn that shirt around the house for the last three days and it had seen better days, and had it been summer I would have rolled with it.  I know my kid.  He would have whined and complained and been awful the minute we stepped outside of the heated house.

Not worth it.

Besides, we were going to the Children’s Museum.

Where this beauty of a toy greeted us.

I’m really glad I’m not a fish.

I really wouldn’t want to have to procreate with THAT.

I found this in the bottom of my foot this week.

I kept pulling and pulling…turns out it was more than halfway in.

I really can’t believe how bad that bitty little thing hurt.

Or how much it bled.  That really deep red blood.

So festive.  Just in time for the holiday.

Doing my part.

I had found this bitty smaller than a scoop container of ice cream in my freezer.

I think the girls left it there while they had babysat our kids last weekend.

Finders keepers.

Besides, I JUST PULLED A GIGANTIC METAL ROD OUT OF MY FOOT AND MIGHT DIE OF A STAPH INFECTION!!!

A girl can enjoy a last meal of sorts.

Or basically the kids were napping so I could hide out and not have to share.

It’s whatevs.

I may very well be the most ridiculous person I know.

I got all picky this year about the trick or treat bags.

Aghast at buying a big bulky pumpkin pail that is ridiculous to store for the following year, so we’ll just throw it away anyway.  So wasteful!

Convinced that the totes I saw in stores were way too big for my little girls to haul around…besides, they wouldn’t match their Belle and Tinkerbell costumes.  So big!  Jill can’t carry that!  They’re ugly!

So for significantly more I made them some.

They’ll play with them year round right?

Yeah, that’s what I tell myself too.

This was this morning.

As in, just a few hours ago.

My husband is the best dad ever.  Ever.

We live near(ish) an air force base that launches rockets periodically (satellite stuff.  Nothing like the full on shuttle.)

Being an aerospace engineer, he’s really into it.  Like an overgrown kid.

He set his alarm for 2:41 a.m.  Woke up our boy.

I crept downstairs to find my boys in the backyard shivering and staring at the sky.  The iPad playing the live feed from mission control. Very official sounding.  Just like on the movies.

“Okay son.  Keep watching.  Now the second stage is going to engage.”

I love that they bond over stuff.

I love that Andy doesn’t water down the vocabulary.

Even though Henry will be really tired today, I love that our quirky family does this kind of stuff.

At 2:00 in the morning.

Because those are the kinds of moments that are worth it.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I don’t blame you for not wanting to leave the comforts of your own bed! I would have done the same thing! Love those trick or treat bags! I was working on costumes last night…nothing like a little procrastination to get a job done!

I don’t blame you a bit! For staying under the cozy covers OR for making your sweet boy change. I STILL have that conversation w/ my 17YR OLD!! And she’s a GIRL! She has no sense of how to match, at.all. Poor kid.. . she gets it from me.

The picture of the sewing pin sent shivers down my back. I’ve stepped on my fair share and ouch! When my now 3 year old was 8 months she swallowed one. We don’t know where she found it because my sewing stuff is upstairs and we were in our living room. It landed crosswise across the opening to her windpipe. She took it like a champ but her parents were a little freaked out. It was a very expensive little pin.

My worst fear… Stepping on a pin. OK not my worst but I dread it. But dread my kids stepping on one even more. My friends brother needed surgery on his foot because as he was pulling the needle out a piece stayed in. GAAAAAH.
On a more pleasant note, that mug is quite cute ;)

  7. 7

    LOVE that mug!!!!

  8. 8

The rocket story makes me smile. It was very touching. You deserve some ice cream after your foot was impaled with a pin! Thanks for hosting!

I had to laugh at the Kobe get up. I argue with my kids all the time. I think my favorite line is ‘You make us look like we don’t buy you nice clothes!!!’ My daughter loves to wear PJ bottoms under ripped jeans. So weird!

*runs to Starbucks to find a Cath Kidston mug……

  12. 12

hahahahahaha maybe I WILL try yoga!! Love the rocket stuff, so cool. My husband and 5 year old son bond over my son pretending to work on computer motherboards and firewalls :)

  13. 13

i heart 2am wake ups for rockets.

too much good stuff this week Jeannett :)

Your treat bags are AWESOME and not ridiculous at all. In fact, a group of us (all local to you- and many that read your blog) actually make personalized treat bags each year in a fun treat-bag-throwdown that coordinate with our kids costumes. You can see our bags on my blog http://www.poot-n-toots.typepad.com or I have a whole board on my pinterest page of treat bags. You won’t fint any plastic pumpkin pails or opillowcases here :)
http://pinterest.com/pootntoots/ I can’t wait to see your girls’ costumes.

What an awesome dad…and what an awesome memory for your son. Ps. I wouldn’t have given in to dreams of being Kobe either if it makes you feel any better. ;-)

  20. 22

  21. 23

TOTALLY worth the wait! This InstaFriday had me cracking up and then tearing up at the end. Thanks for sharing your week with us!

  23. 25

I feel your pain! My hubs shattered a drinking glass in the kitchen last week and I am still finding (with my own bare feet) bits and pieces all over the house!

Love your post today! Love that mug and am hoping it’s at my Starbucks, too! Love the trick or treat bags…I have to finish up those dang things (totes with Halloween buttons all around the top) this weekend, too, along with making a “nurse dress.” Ugh. Love, love, love that your hubby and son were out in the back yard. Makes me feel like there are still things to wonder at.
