The Funny Thing About Blogging

You know those times when you’re like “Hey, I’ll be the fun mom today.  Let’s do something different instead of staying in the safety of our usual routine!…Kids!  Get your shoes!  Henry, get your helmet on, let’s ride our bikes down to the big park!”

Excitment ensues as everyone searches high and low for shoes.

15 minutes later, everyone has proper footwear and I’m already worn out.

I roll my bike out of the garage only to find that one of the tires on the little trailer that would hold the girls is flat.

Ugh.

Henry starts crying…after all, this was supposed to be a bike ride!

Fine.

Um, if I plug this doohicky in…push this button…okay unscrew this…pull this out…

Dad’s air compressor rumbles to life.

Success!

….and POP!

My ears feel like they are bleeding.  They’re certainly ringing.

I just managed to pop the dang tire.

More crying.

And I’m cursing under my breath.

“Mom, how about we drive your car to the park?”

Fine.  I’m over it.  But I opened my fat mouth before all was in order so this is my payment.

But, first, since everyone is loaded up and strapped in, let’s run by the bike shop to see if they have a new tire thing…after all you can actually see the building the bike shop is in from my front door, so it’s a quick one block jaunt…

Except, in my now sweaty haste, I locked my keys in the house.

Can’t go much of anywhere with0ut keys.

I’m short so I can’t reach over the side yard fence to unlatch it…hunt for a bucket to stand on…okay, cool…lucky for me the back door was open.

Keys.

Awesome.

Off to the bike shop.  Finally.

By the way, my ears are still ringing.

They have it!  Only $5!  Hallelujah!

But, my wallet is at home.

Next to the keys I had to retrieve earlier.

Okay…be right back…run home, and then back to the bike shop…

Hey look!  My water bottle top wasn’t screwed on and my cupholders are now filled to the brim.  Super cool.

Water is now sloshing around my car, but by golly I’ve got my tire tube!!!

An hour from when the fiasco began, we got to the stupid park.

And I was so beyond over it, I can’t even begin to tell you.

But a smile creeped its way watching this.

A brother and sister.  Best friends.  Always helping each other.

Although she only weighs 1 pound less than him, he’s always at the ready to hoist her booty whenever she needs extra help.

And this girl.

My little blonde bunned fairy…enjoying the sunshine and cool breeze.

In her Daddy’s shirt.

Granted, Andy probably wore this when he was 3 months old.

Details.

The messy piggy buns.

I die.

Speaking of dying.

I mean seriously?!

Must you really make my heart jump out of my throat doing even the simplest things?!

Yes, yes you must.

Because you are my girl.

My crazy, fearless, full of life girl.

Who makes me laugh out loud every. single. day.

And this boy, so cautious…such the rule follower…with the sweetest heart.

Always corraling his little sister.

“Lucy!  Come here!  No, not that way!  Be careful!”

Except that he looks like he works at Target.

The funny thing about blogging is that I could have left out that story at the beginning and just showed you these pictures.

And our afternoon would have looked like this peaceful, romantic, lazy summer day.

Not filled with frustrating mistakes and feeling like the entire world is out to get me and my kids just trying to make our pathetic way to the park.

You wouldn’t know that these shoes are two sizes too big, but since he couldn’t find the 80 other pairs he owns, I finally gave in and didn’t care that they flopped as he walked.

You wouldn’t know that Lucy looked at me in horror because another, more organized, less disheveled mom had brought healthy snacks of go-gurt, fresh fruit and granola bars for her kids.  Likely all organic, range free, and covered in flaxseed.

And I had nothin’.  Nada.

The funny thing about blogging is that it teaches you to get past all of that frustration and annoyance and take the time to capture the little moments.

The toes in sun kissed grass.

The acrobatics on the playground.

The smiles.

The funny thing about blogging is that even though your afternoon was one disaster after the other, Daddy put the new tire tube on the trailer after dinner and we ventured out for a family bike ride…with a second stop at the park just a few hours later.

Because you want Daddy to see this too.

The beauty in the crazy.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

A picture does paint a thousand words. But it doesn’t paint all the words that tell the story. What you shared at the beginning makes your story much more real and appealing bec it calls to connect with others and causes people like myself to think, feel and say things like: I totally know how that feels!!! Loved this post! :)

I like this post. There are some blogs that paint such pretty pictures, I often wonder if anything bad ever happens to them. Of course we all know bad happens to everyone, but I like the full picture. Your day sounds exactly like how one of mine is when I try to do something a little different. Except sometimes I throw in towel and say just forget it. This is a nice reminder that some storys do have happy endings.

Jeepers I teared up there little at the end. Our kids grow too fast and I love how you take the time to share your day with us (good and bad). Makes me feel less alone in this wonderful crazy world we call mommyhood!

You brought tears to my eyes because this is so my life. I have my big helpful (a bit bossy) brother, the daredevil redhead for me and a couple in between too. Thanks for reminding me why I blog, to document the big, little and imperfection of life!

I had one of those days… all last week. :) I’m seriously impressed by Lucy’s pull up. Wow.

This made me laugh. I purposely do not dress myself or my daughter or my boyfriend in khaki and red for fear that we’ll look like Target employees!

    So true. Nice post! :)

I love that you posted this- the whole thing. I’m especially loving that last phrase- “the beauty in the crazy.”

Call me a freak, but I’m crying after reading that! Thank you for your authenticity – thank you for blogging about what others might deem the “unbloggable” moments of life. You’ve blessed me and I can’t wait until my own little guy is big enough for adventures like this!

It is crazy beautiful! So nice to know you’re not the only one it happens to! Mine are all 4 legged (bark bark) but its still chaos, just more legs! Thanks for sharing and hope it calmed down sooner rather than later!

    Love, love, LOVE this.

Because it is SO real life. And I love that blogging makes us focus on the important stuff. The silly stuff and the hard stuff and the beautiful stuff that makes it worth it.

And your kids are adorable models to boot.

Sometimes that is how I survive my crazy days. I just think “Oh this is bloggable.” And can see the humor in the moment rather than 3 weeks later. Cheap therapy for sure. And love the Target worker.

  19. 19

It’s so easy to let all that stuff get you down….you have a wonderful perspective on recognizing it’s all part of life – and how lucky we are to be experiencing it….bumps, warts, tears and all. Adorable pics of your day.

Don’t you love those kinds of days? Where everything seems to go wrong at first and then your fabulous kiddos just melt all of that away? Beautiful photos!

every day needs a little crazy in it, don’tcha think?
