I went to a psychic and they saw paint in my future.

Here’s my living room.

It’s nothing amazing and it seems to be a constant work in progress, but it definitely gets a lot of use.

As you can see, Nelle is watching Nick & Vanessa’s Dream Wedding here.

“Nelle!  Get up and out!  I’m taking a picture!”

“Can you still see me?”

“Yes!  Back up!”

“Still?”

“Yes!  Just move.  A lot.”

I didn’t even have the energy to make her turn off the TV to make it look like we’re really high class and would never dream of watching E!

Anyway, see that coffee table?

Isn’t it pretty?

I really like it.

But.

If it isn’t painfully obvious, it was bought pre-kids.

Hot wheels have bounced off that glass and it’s stayed intact even once I pry open my tightly squeezed eyes when I hear the clunk.

Glasses have tipped over and still the glass has held.

It gets dirty and I windex off little fingerprints at least daily.

But.

The last couple of weeks, my kids have taken to STANDING ON THE GLASS AND JUMPING OFF OF IT ONTO THE COUCH.

Heart attack much?

Jumping off of any table is inappropriate behavior, but jumping off a glass topped table is downright dangerous.

I thought we had dealt with the behavior until I heard whispers as I was upstairs folding laundry: “one….two…shhhh…three!”

To my horror, I saw both Henry and Lucy standing on the glass.

“Oh God, please please please keep that glass from shattering!!!!”

Not sure I’ve ever prayed so hard so fast.

That’s 70+ pounds of kid standing atop glass that has been bonked, dinged, whacked, and who knows what, compromised for years.

After that episode, I told Andy (who has mentioned more than once that it probably wasn’t the best furniture choice):

“Okay, it’s time for a new coffee table.  While this is technically a discipline issue, the truth is that it’s not the battle I want to call 911 and get 500 stitches over.  It’s too dangerous if they ever chose to disobey again.”

::shudder::

I mean really.  It would be really ugly.

And, truth be told, I was kinda hankering for a change up anyway.

Hey look, there’s Vanessa again.  Talking about her majillion dollar wedding.  But keeping it real in a ball cap.

Anyway, I found this great new coffee table on craigslist.

Now, I realize that the square shape isn’t as conducive to the layout as the rectangular shape of the old table.

But I have a secret plan for that and it may or may not include a sectional sofa.

So ignore that it floats in the space.

Oh wait, you can’t SEE the coffee table????

You mean because it’s totally camouflaged into the floor???!!!

Oh right!  Look real close.  It’s there.  Promise.

Hence the need for paint.

The table itself is a fine color…it just matches my flooring color waaaaayyyyy too closely.

So, here’s where I need your help:

What color should I paint it?

Simple, classic, clean, timeless white?

Fun, happy aqua?

Funky lime green?

Happy yellow?

Some color for the top and a different color for the bottom?

HELP!

Oh, and here’s a close up of the table…

and the coolest part: it opens up to store blankets!

So excited about that part!

So excited.

It doesn’t take much.

I’m a simple creature.

So, what color am I doing ladies?

And when you’re done with that, who’s coming over to do it for me?!

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I say aqua…or teal…or turquoise (I’m thinking of that little table on the right side of the picture and have no idea what color that is?!). Awesome contrast to the dark wood floors…and fun but still “classy” :)

That was a great find! Love the storage. I’m thinking a combo of colors. I’m not sure how funky you want to get, but maybe 3 or 4 colors? But if it’s one color you want, I’d say yellow or aqua (or both!). Happy painting!

    cute!
As for color, when I look at the pic of your room, to the right I see that awesome blue standing out (table, picture, pillows). To the left I see that great green standing out (rocking chair, ottoman). For balance, I’d say a great yellow for the coffee table!
Can’t wait to see what you decide.

do something fun and funky, like that teal/blue in your kitchen.

  5. 5

I’d vote for a white bottom and an aqua top. And I’m talking about your table, not your next bikini ;). From the current looks you like a beachy, modern, fresh & fun look so I think this could fit. An aqua the same or close to the small table already in there?

Whatever you pick I’m sure it will be FUN! Happy Painting!

I think a yellow color would look great. It would pull out the yellow from the fabric on your ottoman and the yellow in the pillows, plus really brighten the room! Great find, love that is has storage.

I think aqua sounds sooo fun! I think it would really pop – especially with the white couches. How do you have white couches and keep them clean? We don’t have kids but I babysit twice a week and our tan couches are a wreck. We’ve only been married 2 years, lol…

Oooh, fun! (And a great, big, whopping Congratulations on your e-book!) I love the aqua or aqua and white idea. The entry table wants somebody to match with! (He called me and said so. That’s how I know.)

  9. 10

Definately aqua, not exactly the same as that little table, maybe a little darker. Can’t wait to see what you choose.

  10. 11

I think a weathered green perhaps?! Off topic, but can you tell me where your slipcovers are from? I am loving the white!

Whatever you do, Jeannett, will be beautiful, I’m sure. I’m with most of the others in saying I like the aqua idea. Or yellow. Sorry, I’m not close enough to come over and paint. :)

I would paint aqua or the same color as the other table….or match some of the red/pink in the throw pillows. Let us know what you decide.

    PS Love the table!!

  13. 14

I vote for dark top, that way it won’t show as much and it would look great w/ the floor. And then aqua for the bottom. What a great find!

Cool table! I vote lime green!

I vote green, but pale please!

  16. 17

    I say a happy yellow!

I think a pretty popping pink pulled from your ottoman would tie it in nicely. PS – jealous of that table, I have had to resort to building my own large storage table because craigslist – houston has failed me.

I like the pink from the ottoman also, it would round out the pastel-y colors in the room as well as add a pop of a “brighter” color.

Pretty room! I think a berry red would make the pillows patterns and the ottoman pop with color. Good Luck! Please show us the results…can’t wait to see :)

I think you should print out the picture of your room and place paint swatches on top of the coffee table. Then you get a visual of the colors in the room…

teal is super trendy right now…

that pop of aqua/teal in the throw pillow on your large couch looks perfect.
