Birthday Fun

Henry’s 4th (!!!) birthday is on the 23rd of June.

But with all the stuff we have going on, we threw his party last Saturday.

This was hands down the most simple, laid back birthday party I have ever thrown.

Ever.

Two families.

The only decor was this banner I found on clearance a couple of months ago.

There were no fancy cupcake toppers.

No centerpieces.

Heck, there wasn’t even a THEME.

Pre-printed Cars plates and napkins (horrors!  I don’t think I have ever ever ever bought pre-printed licensed paper products.  It kinda hurt putting them in my cart.).

Two bags of chips dumped into bowls and pizza from Costco.

And you know what?

I think it was one of the funnest, most low key, relaxing parties ever.

We bought the kids a trampoline for their birthdays.

(The girls’ birthday is in three weeks so it was kind of a joint gift.)

It totally dwarfs my small backyard but they love it.

And sometimes, it isn’t about having a perfect house with a perfect yard worthy of a feature in Apartment Therapy.

Sometimes, it’s about giggling and laughing and having fun.

The morning of his party I said “Henry it’s your party today!”

“Did you make me a rainbow cake?”

“Not yet.  But I promised I would.”

“Okay mom.  That’s fine.  Just don’t forget.”

He has asked for a rainbow cake weekly for his birthday since I first made it for St. Patrick’s Day.

The fun thing about this is that Henry rarely ever ever asks for anything.

So to have him ask for something so specifically and so regularly…well, there was NO WAY I would miss making my boy his rainbow cake.

Baking it in a mason jar was awesome.

I’ll give you more details tomorrow on how to make it and some tips.

I’d do things a little bit different next time, but aren’t they so fun?!

The kids (and dogs!) played together so so so well.

Very little bickering.

Just lots of laughing, barking, and happiness.

We often default to having giant parties with literally 20+ kids and just as many adults.

That is its own kind of fun, but having such a small group was pretty awesome too.

The trampoline was a huge hit.

And Daddy’s a really good sport.

Since, you know, the first time Mom jumped with the kids she learned the hard way that bladders don’t work quite the same way three kids later.

*ahem*

Lucy held her ground with the boys.

Actually, she spent her time in there tackling them.

That girl.

Jill did some jumping too.

I wish you could hear the screeching coming from that little thing.

Makes your ears bleed.

And your heart swell.

Finally it was time for Rainbow Cake.

And Henry couldn’t have been more excited.

So so so sweet.

I can’t even put it into words.

FOUR!!!

Not okay.

The boys compared colors.

While Lucy shoveled.

As did Jilly.

Who needed hosed down by the time she was done.

And having personal mason jars of cake?

Quite possibly the coolest thing ever.

Love that boy.

Just adore.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Having time to really relax and enjoy is SO important. Henry is such a sweet boy and it’s no small thing that his loving mama fulfilled his request (thinking about all of the memories my mom blessed me with). I’ll be putting the rainbow cake in my recipe box for Chey.

Henry’s birthday is the same day as my youngest who will be 2 on the 23rd. And my other little guy will also be turning 4 on the 27th. And then you can top that off with today being my 30th birthday. Yeah, 3 birthdays all within a week. Craziness I tell you.

I absolutely love the rainbow cakes in the mason jars. You must share this so I can possibly do it for my boys’ birthday party this weekend.
