Kitchen Update Reveal

Soooooooooo….

basically….

my kitchen is “done”.

EEK!

Wanna see?

Huh?  huh?  wanna?  wanna?

Let’s start with a BEFORE picture shall we?

And now…the AFTER:

EEK!

Now, I fully realize that my kitchen as it was, was nothing too horrific.

There was no flocked mustard wallpaper.  Nor was there avocado green tile.

And frankly, in that picture (aside from the glaring hunk of tile missing from the corner) it looks pretty dang good.

BUT, it looked better from afar.  It was kind of a disaster up close.

The missing hunk o’ tile?

The one that was the FIRST thing you saw when you walked in the door?

Replaced with pretty, shiny, gorgeous Wilsonart HD Laminate.

What?

What did she say?

She didn’t…

Oh yes, yes I did!

That, my dear friends, is LAMINATE.

Laminate!

Not your 87 year old Granny’s laminate.

Not the weird, peeling buttery yellow laminate in your first apartment.

The latest, greatest, oh so pretty (and affordable!) laminate.

Laminate that I pretty much want to marry.

Because you see, when you got a little closer, you saw that the white tile with WHITE grout…was anything BUT white.

Every 6 weeks I spent some quality time with a bottle of full strength bleach and a toothbrush.

And two days later, Andy would spill his blueberry shake.

Every. Single. Time.

And it drove me INSANE.

I had no idea I could despise something as innocuous as tile.

But now, instead of THIS unsanitary nastiness…I have this:

Seamless.

Just wipe it clean.

Happiness.

Where there were once simple can lights, we have pendant lights hanging over the bar area.

As for the cabinets…they were fine.

Mostly.

They were in great shape, had simple lines and were sturdy.

But…they were this 1987 Honey Oak with a hint of orange.

So much potential.

Like that homely girl  in What Not to Wear that got a haircut, some makeup, and burned her horse face shirts…to find that she was bona fide supermodel material?

Basically, that was my cabinets.

Give ’em some make up, a little bling and a better hair do and they’re ready for the runway!

I like cabinet hardware.  I think it looks more finished.

Besides, I pretty much needed an excuse to use those pretty glass pulls!

We also got a new stainless steel sink and a new faucet.

My faucet’s got CURVES!

I kinda wanna whistle at it every morning.

We’ve slowly updated a few appliances from the white to stainless steel over the years.

Left on the list is the oven and the stovetop.

The oven doesn’t bother me as much because it blends in with the cabinets…but I’m secretly hoping the stovetop dies.  Soon.

My sink area is one of my favorite transformations.

Before:

After:

Isn’t it so happy and bright?!

Makes me kinda wanna do dishes.

Kinda.

Okay, not really.

I just want to stand there and look out the window.

Now, if you’re really astute, you’ll see that we’re not 100% done.

We have to put up a backsplash (probably white subway tile), but that’ll happen in a couple of weeks.

And, we hope to pull up the peachy-pink-is-supposed-to-be-tan-but-its-not-really floor tile and continue the pergo woodlooking stuff that we put down in the living/playrooms.

Annnnd…I’m on the hunt for a mini chandelier to hang over the sink.

I have the perfect size/style hanging in my room, but it’s a candleholder.  I need an electrical type one for above the sink.

Got any recommendations?

My knobs are blingy glass so what’s a little more?  :)

I realize that painting over wood is controversial.

But I’m so totally okay with it.

Want to know more about my jadite pendant lights?  See HERE.

To see my kitchen backsplash (glass subway tile!  eek!!!) see HERE.

{A huge, giant thank you to Wilsonart who provided the countertops in exchange for participating in a video series for them.  As mentioned before, I was not required to blog about it, or link to them, but I’m gonna anyway.}

linking up with 30 handmade days, and tatertots & jello.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

I love the makeover. I’ve finally convinced my husband to let me paint the kitchen cabinets white. Are you completely happy with the HD laminate? We have a lot of countertop to replace. So anything will cost a pretty penny.

  23. 23

Thanks for posting this! I have the paint all ready to paint my old oak kitchen cabinets (deep teal) and am checking out Wilsonart laminate too! I have had Wilsonart laminate counters in my kitchen (Hunter Green) for about 20 years (!), and they are still good – really – but tired of Hunter green and ready for change. Priced granite (gag) and thought if I got a great 20 years out of this counter – seriously, I’m good with that – especially with the new colors and surface durability! I do not want to spend a fortune on a color of granite that I might get tired of. By the way – everyone said the Hunter Green woud show scratches and wear really fast – Ha! sure, it doesn’t look new- I cook HARD – no fussing with the countertop and well, it still is pretty darn good!

  24. 24

Oh man I love it so much! I would love to paint my cabinets but I am so intimidated.. They’re also less than two years old, but I didn’t get to pick them so it doesn’t matter right? :D

I love the kitchen! Looks so awesome! I would put beadboard backsplash up instead of subway tiles just because I think it gives it such charm. Plus I bet it is less expensive. We re did our kitchen 4 years ago and I have awesome nice Kraft wood cabinets in pine and now I wish they were white :( but my hubby is sooo opposed to painting wood (that midwest boy in him). It was a battle to let me paint the banister white.

Could you please, please, please post about how you painted the kitchen cabinets? Maybe you have a video of the process???? I have the paint, I have the grungy cabinets, and I can’t muster the oomph to get started, i.e. I’m scared sh*tless to start and make grungy look like a grade school art project. HELP!

Your kitchen is beautiful! We are getting ready to remodel our kitchen and our drawings are very similar to your design. All of our appliances will be locaated in the very same spots. Looks great! We have white cabinets in our kitchen and are going with a dark countertop like yours (a Wilsonart HD laminate also). Can you tell me what color yours is- it looks like maybe Raven Gemstone? I’m undecided whether to upgrade our sink too but love how the undermount looks.
