Who Knew???!!!

One of the great things about going to Blissdom was rooming with a bunch of fabulously stylish girls.

Girls who you could borrow all of their amazing jewelry and have fun accessories for every outfit.

Free of charge.

Another perk?

Being roommates with Jess and her gorgeously curly head of hair.

And having the following conversation with her:

“Jeannett!  You have curly hair!”

“No…I don’t.  It’s only partly curly.  Parts of it are stick straight.  Parts are wavy.  Some parts are curly.  It’s a disaster.”

“Girl.  Your hair is curlier than mine is straight out of the shower!”

“Huh?”

“Yes!  You have curly hair!”

“No.  Really.  I don’t.  It dries all weird and inconsistent.  I wish it were curly.  It would save me like 20 minutes getting ready…or the perpetual ponytail I wear during the week when I’m too lazy to flat iron it.”

“That’s because you have to put PRODUCT in it dork!  My hair would dry all weird if I didn’t do it too!”

“Really?”

“Can I do your hair today?”

“Um, sure.  But I’m telling you: it’s not curly.  This won’t work.”

Oh.

That’s not just curly.

That’s CURLY.

Yes, the camera is in my face.  It was awkward to take a picture of myself.

No, I don’t know why I am wearing sunglasses indoors.

Just focus on the hair people!  Quit asking so many dang questions!

{darling ruffled camera strap by eclectic whatnot.  awesome aqua flower ring by funky vintage kitchen.}

When I did my hair at home (translation plopped some gel in it while it was still wet), Andy’s response: “Whoa!  I didn’t know I was married to the brunette Lisa Leonard!!!”  (we are friends in real life…so that’s  not as random as it may sound.)

So, apparently I have curly hair.

And I didn’t even know it.

I do, however, have a double chin.  Gross.

I guess I always thought that girls with curly hair had really obviously curly hair when it was DRY too.

And they just put gel and whatnot in it to define and separate the curls.

Oops.

I knew that.

No, I did not have to travel 2,000 miles to Nashville to figure out I had curly hair.

Man, I wish I knew this years ago…

To think of all the time I would have saved.

Boo.

These are the magical curl inducing bottles.

Interestingly enough, the longer I do this, the curlier my hair is “getting”.  Something about me stretching out the curl all these years.

Clearly I’m not the sharpest tack in the shed.

And you wanna know what’s hysterical?

For months Andy and I have been saying “WHERE on earth does Lucy get that curly hair????!!!!”

Because you know, it’s super curly out of the shower and then dries fairly straight.

Good thing her mom has curly haired friends.

I’ll let her in on the curl gel secret before she spends 30 years of her life with a flat iron.

Good grief.

Try to not make too much fun of me.

I know it’s ridiculous.

You know how many times I’ve heard “How did you NOT KNOW????!!!!”

Yeah.

I'm a mom to four. A wife to one. I believe in story. I love telling you about mine and would love to hear yours. There's really no sense in wasting our suffering and not sharing in each other's joy. We're all in this together...even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Ok I have been saying the SAME thing for all of my life- it’s not curly…and truly I believe mine is not because no matter how much stuff I put in it it still dries funny & poufy & frizzy. :(
But I will try the products you just showed because I went to Blissdom too and I learned a whole bunch & I hope that I can ‘learn’ one more thing from you ;) Thanks for sharing & I love that you didn’t ‘know’!

Hey Jeanette! If you have time, you’ve got to check out the book called Curly Girl. It gives you all sorts of tips on how to take care of your curly hair. My sister got it for me a few years ago and I found it really helpful. No one ever teaches you how to take care of it!! Enjoy!

This post is SO funny! Welcome to the curly haired club! I go through seasons of embracing it myself (currently rocking the curls) – except only a few months ago did a fellow curly tell me about leave in conditioner! I had no CLUE the miracle that product is! The gel and mousse never give me the kind of curls the other girls have (soft, not crunchy, but still defined!) – the leave in conditioner is KEY!! I feel the same way – WHO KNEW!

And PS – leaving in REGULAR conditioner does NOT work the same way….speaking from experience here! Whoops!

HA! That was me too! I second reading Curly Girl, and I love the Deva Curl line, particularly the gel…AnGel, I think? Lifechangers.

LOVE it! Your cut looks great with the curls! No product on the planet could get me into that club. I have hippie hair. Patiently waiting for perms to come back in… Although I realize it may be 35 years.

Awesome, awesome! My hair is straight…it has a few weird wavy parts but even with your magic gel (and yes, I’ve tried it)…nope. I’m glad it works for you though!

This happened to me too – during that awkward 14 year old stage. I was so jealous of my friends with perms when one of my friends realized I had naturally curly hair. Oops! I’ve tried lots of products and tend to bounce around from one to the other. Will definitely have to try the leave-in conditioner trick.

Have fun with your new hair :)

LOL, you’re a dork…without product, all curlies would be a mess. A product I love is called kinky curly curling custard..it’s fabulous without a bunch of icky stuff in it. I found it in our Whole foods.

Wait! Didn’t Ruthanne tell you that you need to use DevaCurl??? That stuff is amazing. A whole line of products for curly girls. Also, one of my curly girl friends swears by a product by Scruples . . . I think.

oooh – off to see if your products have propylene glycol in them… those two darn chemicals in all curly girl products! My hair is pretty curly if I do stuff to it… but ends up in a pony tail because I’m just too lazy. I totally understand how you could have gone so long without knowing. We’re all told to straighten straighten straighten! I won’t trust a hairdresser who tells me to straighten my hair (heh- I guess that’s not a problem since I don’t get my hair done often/ever). Glad you’ve come over to the curly side! Oh and a side note, you can use a light generic lotion to spruce up your curls too- right out of the shower. :)

AMAZING! I absolutely love tiny tiny things. I just recently posted a little cheater tutorial for making wonky stars (http://mommysnaptime.blogspot.com/2011/02/tutorial-tiny-wonky-stars.html) that finish at just barely 1.5″ Oh they’re wonderful! But sometimes I do stop and think… if I had made this block regular sized I would have a king sized quilt already! lol. But the tiny works for me in challenge, and in that I have a very small stash of fabrics. :) I can always use my fav. fabric if I only use 1″ at a time!

This is too funny that you didn’t know. It looks great curly, and I love the shape/cut. As someone who has very obviously curly hair (I have spiral corkscrews! – wet or dry!) I am always on the lookout for a good product. I find something and my hair gets tired of it and then it doesn’t work any more. Right now I am super frizz and in between products. Please keep the product suggestions coming! I will definitely check back later.

I too woke up with curly hair one day…. IT’s fun-embrace it!

Now you have fun curls to match your fun personality and sense of humor! I use Pantene mousse for curls. Without it, my head needs a lion tamer. I put it in there when its wet and it dries so nice and soft. It smells really good too.

Haha, I always said the SAME thing. If you haven’t already, invest in a diffuser. My favorite curl creme is by Bumble and Bumble. It’s a little pricey, but a little goes a loooong way (I have the thickest hair of anyone I know and only need a nickle-sized amount) and it gives you really soft, romantic curls without the crunch that gel and mousse give.
